A Sussex spaniel named Ch Clussexx Three D Grinchy took the top prize at the Westminster Kennel Club's 133rd dog show last night. Nicknamed "Stump," the 10-year-old canine's competition was a giant schnauzer (working group), a brussels griffin (toy), an Irish deerhound (hound), standard poodle (non-working), Scottish terrier (terrier) and a puli (herding). But he impressed Best in Show judge Sara Brewster Tietjen, who said, “He’s just everything that you’d want in the breed, and I couldn’t say no to him.”

Yesterday was the first day of the Westminster Kennel Club's 133rd Annual Dog Show (yes, there was some protest). The terrier, hound, non-sporting and herding groups were seen: The top terrier was a Scottish terrier named Ch Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, top hound was a Scottish deerhound named Ch Gayleward's Tiger Woods, the top non-sporting dog was a standard poodle named Ch Randenn Tristar Affirmation and the top herding dog was a puli named Ch Cordmaker Field Of Dreams (videos here).

Today is the first day of the Westminster Kennel Club's 2009 Dog Show. Over 2,500 dogs in 170 breeds will compete for best of breed, best of group, and yes, best in show over today and tomorrow (best in show judging is tomorrow). Last year's winner was crowd-pleaser Uno, a very adorable beagle.

It's that time of year again - the Westminster Kennel Club will be naming the Best in Show dog tonight. Today is day two (of two) of the Westminster Kennel Club's 132nd Dog show, and the best in group for the sporting, working and toy groups will be determined. Those dogs will face off against the winners of the herding (an Australian Shepherd), non-sporting (a standard poodle), terrier (a Sealhyam Terrier), and the hound (a beagle) groups.

Purebred dogs from across the country are rocking out at Madison Square Garden for the Westminster Kennel Club's 131 Westminster Dog Show. Over 2,600 dogs are competing today and tomorrow for Best in Breed and Best in Show prizes. Many dogs and their owners stay at the Hotel Pennsylvania across the street from MSG, where dogs meet each other and their owners sniff out the competition.

Some of Gothamist's favorite stories in the city were about the animals of New York City. Here's how animals ruled the Big Apple in 2006:

Yesterday, someone wrote on Gothamist Contribute, "One of the winners at the cat show today freaked out and took off. By show's end, it still had not been found. Poor thing. Maybe expecting cats to stay put like dogs is just a bad idea."

Queens residents and people headed to JFK, be on the watch for a skinny, most likely hyper dog that responds to the name "Vivy." Her real name is Ch. Bohem C'est La Vie, and the three-year old whippet had just won an Award of Merit at the Westminster Dog Show, when she apparently went missing at JFK Airport yesterday. Authorities aren't sure how Vivy got out of her cage, the cage apparently was keyless. Delta told the NY Times, "We are working with the local authorities to retrieve the animal" but left it at that because Vivy is a customer and there's a customer privacy policy. Her owner, Jill Walton, who was told about Vivy's disappearance while waiting for the plane to take-off, is worried about Vivy in the cold. And the authorities are taking this very seriously: There was a helicopter involved in the search.

- The principal of Brooklyn Tech had his daughter attend a Brooklyn public school...even though they live in NJ, so now he resigned and must pay the Department of Education back for her tuition!

Woops! Why didn't somebody tell us that the third annual Cat Championship at Madison Square Garden was this weekend? Not to be confused with the Westminster Dog Show the Cat competition... Actually you should feel free to confuse the two, as they seem to be basically the same thing (show, shops and adoption tables set up in the Garden being the main features). One just has prestige and the other has cats. Anywho, the big news at this years show is the addition of a "Feline Agility Competition" which according to the website includes "Cats scurrying through tunnels, jumping, running mazes - every bit as exciting as in the dog fancy! Don't miss It. It will fill your need for laughter and fun." And if that doesn't fill your needs, the good people of the Cat Show want you to know that you can buy the commemorative jewelry here. Oh, and in case you were worried about the stress of this new addition to the show, the Agility comp has no effect on the Best in Show prize. That is decided based on looks alone.

- And for all of you worried about how Katrina has affected the animals, Gothamist was relieved to find out that the Houston Zoo also been helping New Orleans' Audobon Zoo by sheltering their animals... you can also donate to the Humane Society

Our friend Phillip Torrone's photo moblog has not only himself posting pictures but his Aibo posting pictures as well! Phillip tells us he uses a P900 Sony Ericsson phone to post, but the robot dog, Whuffie, posts "every few hours automatically using its built in camera, his built in WiFi emails it to the site." That's brilliant. Gothamist would like Phillip's real cat to post as well, but that would require PT to implant WiFi and create a special kitty keyboard, and that sounds like a project for 2005.

Josh is going to Sardi's for lunch today. More about the Westminster Dog Show.

For the past 128 years, the Westminster Kennel Club has been holding The Westminster Dog Show, where dogs are trotted around for judges to judge, examine, and molest. It took only an hour for the 2,500 entries to be filled by eager dog owners and breeders. New York has 246 entries, New Jersey has 178 and Connecticut 108. And did you know that there's a "Junior Showmanship" competition, where 10-18 year olds compete on their handling skills? More fun facts about the Westminster Dog Show.

Chow chow: the kind of dog I'd like to get to get 'Best in Show' It's that time of the year again: The 127th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! The official Westminster Kennel Club site links to judges of all breeds. And I can't talk about the Westminster Dog Show without mentioning the wonderful Christopher Guest film, Best in Show. An interview with Christopher Guest pre-Best in Show, but with insight in his mind. The only thing I'll look forward to with the end of the Westminster Dog Show is that incessant use of "Who Let The Dogs Out?" during news program reporting about the dog show will stop.
