To Catch A Predator, Goldman Sachs Edition

To Catch A Predator, Goldman Sachs Edition

A corporate lawyer for Goldman Sachs thought he was making online overtures to a 15-year-old but it turned out it was just a sting, culminating in the 33-year-old being charged with "trying to disseminate indecent material to a minor" yesterday in a Westchester County court. According to the Daily News, Upper West Side resident—and married father of three— Todd Genger was apparently "caught in a sting operation aimed at perverts who solicit young girls for sex." Genger had allegedly been chatting with a 15-year-old girl—who turned out to be an investigator in the Westchester DA's office—since April and went to Westchester this week, in an attempt to do the deed. The News also reports that the DA's office said that Genger "admitted to participating in the online conversations about the intended tryst, which included 'specific explicit sexual acts.'" Genger was released without bail and faces up between 15 months and four years if convicted. more ›

Lawyer Charged With Wife's 2006 Murder

Over a year ago, a Westchester couple, driving home from Manhattan, was shot on Route 100. The wife, teacher's assistant Peggy Perez-Olivo, was fatally shot in the head while her husband, recently disbarred lawyer Carlos Perez-Olivo, was shot in the stomach. Carlos Perez-Olivo claimed another car had run him off and that the driver shot at them. Now investigators have made an arrest, charging Perez-Olivo was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. more ›

Feds Love Investigating Jeanine Pirro

She may developing a talk show, but that doesn't mean former Westchester DA and failed Attorney General candidate Jeanine Pirro can't be investigated some more! WNBC's Jonathan Dienst reports the federal investigation into Pirro's doings has broadened, with a focus on what occurred during 2004-2005. more ›

Pirro and Cuomo, So Nasty Together

Pirro and Cuomo, So Nasty Together

Attorney General candidates Jeanine Pirro and Andrew Cuomo delivered a crazy, mean-spirited exchange in their first debate. And if it weren't so sad that these are our candidates, it would be funny. It was a little funny when Pirro mocked Cuomo's record as a "non-practicing lawyer" (14 months in the Manhattan DA's office over 20 years ago) and his record as the secretary of HUD under President Clinton, saying, "Your running for attorney general is like my running for Joe Torre's position [as Yankees manager] because I played softball 21 years ago." Ha - but Cuomo didn't hold back, telling the audience, "Just so we're clear, there is a candidate who is being accused of criminal wrongdoing and is under investigation by a number of law-enforcement agencies and had their ethics questioned - that's not me, however. SNAP! more ›

Jeanine Pirro's Scandal Doesn't Hurt Her Poll Numbers...

...but the truth is, Andrew Cuomo still leads her by 19% in the State Attorney General's race, according to a Quinnipiac poll. The Post does headline the news as "Jeanine Nibbles Into Andy's Enormous Headline" since she imrpoved by 4%, from 52-29 to the current 50-31. If the scandal is improving name recognition for her, she'd need to have a Congressional page scandal to make any more headway. more ›

Jeanine Pirro Worried About Al and a Family Friend?

Jeanine Pirro Worried About Al and a Family Friend?

One day is all it took. After it was revealed Republican Attorney General candidate and former Westchester DA Jeanine Pirro was under federal investigation for possibly wiretapping her husband - because she was worried he was cheating on her - it's revealed who the possible "other lady" in Al Pirro's life was: The 35 year old wife of the lawyer who represented Al Pirro in his 2000 tax evasion case. The Post calls Lisa Santangelo "a stunning brunette 20 years [Jeanine's] junior" while the Daily News calls her "elegant". Either way Santangelo is painted as a family friend (plus the Pirros and Santangelos live near each other) but Satangelo wasn't wearing a wedding band when the photogs descended. However, Santangelo's husband told reporters, "I stand by my wife. Due to the fact that there is an ongoing federal investigation, neither my wife or myself can comment. However, we have been friends with the Pirros for many years." And then his law partner issued a statement saying, "We emphatically deny that there was any affair." more ›

NY State's GOP Dog Days

NY State's GOP Dog Days

With the start of the 2006 calendar year weeks away, the wrangling for governor will be more earnest, but right now, the troubles are within the state's Republican party. New York magazine has a fun guide to GOP rivalries and backstabbing that helps elucidate the situation, though Ed Cox is nowhere to be seen (Cox is rumored to be another GOP choice, instead of Westchester DA Jeannine Pirro, to run against Hillary Clinton). The NY Times has a feature about Pataki's problems, with one anonymous Democrat suggesting that the state will be controlled by Democratic Assembly Leader Sheldon Silver and State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno (a Republican!), which sounds scary to us. more ›

Pirro-ettes Around Running Against Hillary

Pirro-ettes Around Running Against Hillary

More trouble for Westchester DA Jeannine Pirro's four month bid to run against Hillary Clinton in 2006: She has to chat with Governor Pataki to "weigh her options." Earlier this week, Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said Pirro should get out of hte race and run for Attorney General instead. Scuttlebutt is that Ed Cox, Richard Nixon's son-in-law, will return to the Senate race, after having been shushed out by Pataki earlier this year. What's hilarious is that Pirro's own advisers may be the ones trying to move her to the Attorney General's case, since she'd probably get thrashed by Clinton. more ›

Bruno to Pirro, "Get out!"

Bruno to Pirro, "Get out!"

As if things couldn't get worse for Jeanine Pirro, State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno has told the Westchester County DA to get out of the race for US Senate. Pirro has been fighting an uphill battle ever since her campaign started with a flub and the more recent news that her fundraising has been less than stellar. In his statement, Bruno said:

"I have said from the beginning, and I know a lot of my colleagues, and people within the party, share the thought, that she would make a great attorney general. By background, by her experience, by her prosecutorial record. And I hope that before this procedure gets too much further, that Jeanine Pirro would reconsider and run for A.G."
Ouch! But it seems like Bruno is just stating the obvious - Westchester DA to state attorney general, makes sense to us. In response to Bruno's statement, Pirro released a short statement, "Senator Bruno is a respected majority leader and I appreciate his confidence in my abilities. However, I am a candidate for U.S. Senate." We wonder if Pirro will be sending Senator Bruno a Christmas card this year. more ›

Golisano Thinks About Another Failed Run For Governor

Golisano Thinks About Another Failed Run For Governor

Apparently Senator John McCain in getting all up in New York's business by urging billionaire Thomas Golisano to run for NY governor again. AGAIN! You'll rememember Golisano from such failed campaigns such as his attempts to win the governorship in 1994, 1998, and 2002. Well, it certainly wouldn't be another election without him. And our current lame duck Governor Pataki is stopping by Iowa on his way to Asia. Yes, because those connections in Iowa are so common. more ›
