Homeless Man Squatting In Ann Curry's Still-Unrenovated-UWS Townhouse

Eight years ago, Today Show anchor Ann Curry and her husband Brian Ross bought a townhouse on West 71st Street, with a plan to renovate the building for their family. But then their neighbors got upset at the construction, claiming in a 2006 lawsuit that Curry and Ross's crew had damaged their properties and caused too much noise. Now, the one person who is living in the multi-million dollar townhouse today is someone the NY Post describes as a "hobo." more ›

Pols Want Action On Dangerous UWS Intersection

Yesterday, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal called upon the Department of Transportation to stop dragging its feet and "implement a swift solution to the public safety hazard at a dangerous 'bow-tie' intersection at West 71st Street at Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue." Last year, there were 25 accidents (including a taxi cab that crashed into a West 72nd Street subway station head house) and eight this year—just a few weeks ago, another cab crashed into a pedestrian island, injuring a woman. Should get pretty interesting when the Trader Joe's opens on Broadway between 71st and 72nd! more ›

More Details On Fatal UWS Roommate Stabbing

The Post rounds out more facets of the Saturday afternoon murder of a 63-year-old man in his West 71st Street apartment. While Walter Walker's roommate Frederick Zappulla confessed, the Post reports that the violence was precipitated when Walker "confronted him about smoking crack in the apartment...The two roommates argued in the kitchen, where Zappulla smashed Walker over the head with a frying pan and then reached for a knife and repeatedly stabbed him." Zappulla called his brother to say he killed Walker and then left for the Yonkers Raceway, where "he began blathering to an EMS technician who eventually persuaded him to talk to Yonkers police." Walker, who operated a cleaning service, had rented out the room to Zappulla in February; a former roommate told the Post that Walker suffered from Parkinson's Disease, "I warned Walter [Zappulla] was no good. I thought he would stiff Walter for the rent." Update: The West Side Spirit reports, "Zappulla was Walker’s romantic partner, according to interviews with residents of the West 71st Street building. The two had lived in Walker’s one-bedroom apartment for more than a year." more ›

Last Wednesday afternoon, a tobacco store manager was shot during an apparently attempted robbery. Three suspects, who fled the store at Broadway and West 71st Street in a vehicle and were later found at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, were arraigned yesterday. The Daily News reports the "three goons" hail from Delaware and that 25-year-old Joseph Terry "was the mastermind and getaway driver." The masked gunmen were actually two teenage girls, Evette Wynn, 18, and Annquasia Watson, 15; while Watson "kept the door shut, Wynn allegedly fired a round into the ceiling and then shot" the store owner in the stomach. Wynn and Watson left with $2,000. The trio were arraigned on charges including robbery and possession of stolen property; Wynn was also charged with attempted murder. more ›

Store Owner Shot on Upper West Side

According to WABC 7, the police are looking for a gunman who shot a store owner on Broadway, near West 71st Street, in Manhattan. The police say that around 4:30 p.m. the gunman walked into Alex's Tobacco store (which also sells lottery tickets) and "started shooting." MyFoxNY reports that it may have been a robbery attempt; plus, "Police found an SUV near the scene of the shooting that they believe may have belonged to the shooter and an accomplice." The suspect is still at large; the store owner, who was shot in the hip, is in stable condition at a hospital. The busy 1/2/3 subway station at West 72nd Street is right by the store; a reader who walked by the scene at 5 p.m. said, "I saw all of these cops, NYPD cars, yellow tape blockades on the street, and helicopters hovering above the crime scene. People were crowded around while a cop said he didn't know exactly what had happened." more ›
