A few months ago, a more unlikely scenario could not be imagined. The Yankees are barreling into the playoffs after recovering from one of the team's worst season starts in franchise history. The Mets, on the other hand, are staggering towards the end of the season having lost five straight and 11 of their last 15 games. A seemingly insurmountable lead in their division has been whittled to second place behind the Phillies, and the Mets have let a playoffs appearance escape from their control. The NYPD and FBI shut down a $3.3 billion Internet gambling ring, arresting 27 people and seizing $7 million in cash and assets worth $500 million, including four Manhattan condos. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly called shutting down website Playwithal.com "the largest illegal gambling operation this department has ever encountered." Here's how it worked, according to the Daily News:

Don't look now, but the Mets have the best...we're just not going to finish that sentence. The Mets are riding high after a sweep of the Washington Nationals and are on a six game winning streak. Yesterday, in Victor Zambrano's first start of the season, the Mets cruised to victory again, defeating the Nationals 13-4. In the win, the Mets managed to hit four home runs, including three in the first inning by Carlos Beltran, David Wright, and Cliff Floyd. Carlos Delgado added his home run in the fifth inning. The last time the Mets hit three home runs in the first inning was in 1999. The Mets tagged Nationals starter Livan Hernandez for 11 hits and 8 runs in six innings. Zambrano, who allowed 6 hits and 3 runs in five innings, wasn't magnificent in his debut, but with the offense the Mets displayed yesterday, he didn't have to be - unfortunate for our DC brethren who has a team sitting at 2-8 on the season. more ›

There was no repeat of last week's game by Pedro Martinez against the Washington Nationals. In that game, he hit a career high three batters in the game. Last night, Martinez had command of his pitches, allowing only three hits and one walk in seven innings. The lone run came on a solo home run by Jose Vidro in the 4th inning. Last week, in his first career start, Brian Bannister saw his effort go to waste as the Mets bullpen blew his win against the Washington Nationals at Shea Stadium. Yesterday afternoon, Bannister was in cruise control against the Nationals as the Mets spoiled the Nationals home opener, 7-1. Bannister pitched seven impressive innings and allowed only three hits - one of which was Alfonso Soriano's solo home run in the 7th. The most impressive aspect of the rookie's performance was that he faced the Nationals less than a week ago. more ›

By all accounts, the Mets had a good day yesterday. They unveiled their new stadium plans and picked up a 10-5 win against the Washington Nationals. Pedro Martinez made his first start of the season and was less than stellar. While Martinez won the game, he allowed 4 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), and 5 walks. While he did strike out six, Pedro hit three Nationals hitters, including hitting Jose Guillen twice. In the 5th inning, when Guillen was hit for the 2nd time in the game (and 5th time in his career by Pedro), he took steps towards the pitcher's mound. Paul Lo Duca had to restrain Guillen who obviously has reason to suspect that Martinez intentionally hit him. The incident caused both benches and bullpens to clear. Following the momentary interruption, Nick Johnson promptly hit a three-run homer. more ›

Opening day is a good day for things to roll your way. In yesterday's 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals, the Mets had great day with help from some new members and a lucky break. Tom Glavine started the season off on a good note, working six solid innings allowing six hits and one run. Xavier Nady, who should have Xavier McDaniel's old nickname, and Paul Lo Duca both had notable days at the plate, with Nady going 4-4 with two doubles while Lo Duca was 2-4 with a double. David Wright's home run in the 6th inning would prove to be the winning run and elicited insanely premature chants of MVP from the crowd. more ›

At the start of the season, all we wanted from the Mets was a winning season. With our expectations low, Gothamist is somewhat pleased with the .500 record the Mets have. Years of disappointments have set our standards pretty low. Of course there is plenty of season left for the Mets to disappoint again. Pedro Martinez has pitched well, proving thus far that he has deserved his big contract. The other big off season signing isn't doing so well. A 9th inning rally by the Mets put their only runs on the game, but was stopped short when Brian Daubach flied out to end the game with the tying run at 3rd.
