No one knows for sure what’s to become of the future Union Square pavilion, but a strong contender for the space – formerly occupied by the shabby Luna Park – is a new restaurant helmed by Danny Meyer, who opened the Union Square Café in ’85 and whose Shake Shack in Madison Square Park is an object of obsession. Construction begins on a new pavilion this winter, but some insiders are betting Meyer wins the......

Mark Tyrell, who attends Chelsea Career and Technical high, was stabbed repeatedly on East 14th Street after emerging from the Union Square subway station. Police believe the incident started on the subway platform when Tyrell ran into some people. When Tyrell was chased out, he was attacked outside a pizzeria, where an employee told the NY Times, "One......

This morning around 9 a.m., during the morning rush hour, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in Union Square. Police say that the teen had gotten out of the subway and got into what WABC 7 calls a "verbal dispute" that caused the group to chase the boy towards his high school. (WABC also showed footage of his bloody jacket and backpack at the scene.) The group caught up with him outside 104 East 14th Street,......

Yesterday morning, two teens were stabbed on West 58th Street. The Post reports that two girls had gotten "into a beef on Wednesday and told their boyfriends, who got together to rumble yesterday." The NY Times says that two boys were attacked by 11 other teens. The fight occurred outside 220 West 58th Street, where Landmark High School and Coalition School for Social Change share a building. Shopkeepers locked their stores; one told the Post,......

Police arrested 16 year old Francisco Baez for the murder of Taishawn Bellevue. Bellevue was killed during an shocking Wednesday afternoon brawl in the Union Square Greenmarket, where about 50 teens convened with belts, bats, bricks and more. The fight may have been prompted by some students feeling insulted by others, which then led to groups of students from nearby Washington Irving High School and Brooklyn's Science Skills High School to meet. Baez was picked......

Some details have emerged about what might have caused Wednesday's brutal fight amongst teenagers in Union Square that left one teen dead and two others injured. Yesterday Police Commissioner Kelly said it was a "planned confrontation": Some Washington Irving High School female students were "insulted," so they enlisted their boyfriends at Science Skills High School to defend their honor. Commissioner Kelly also suggested that the fight could have been gang-related, as some Washington Irving students......

The initial reports about an afternoon stabbing at the Union Square Greenmarket were just a small picture of what happened: A group of about 50 teenagers gathered, using bricks, knives, belts planks and more and attacked each other. Seventeen year old Taishawn Bellevue was fatally stabbed in the chest. Seventeen year old Glenwood Nobles was stabbed multiple times in the back and Carlos Tejada was hit on the head with a brick. Tejada was released......

NY1 has a good look at the differing rules for cell phone use at two very different public schools in the Bronx. One is DeWitt Clinton High School, where classes are frequently overcrowded and there are metal detectors at the entrance. The other is Bronx High School of Science, the magnet school whose has seven Nobel Prize-winning (in physics) graduates. Current Department of Education rules say that students are not allowed to bring cell phones......

We love this story: A pair of cops went "undercover" as gay men and snuggled in Union Square - and ended up arresting a gay-basher. The incident occured Monday afternoon, which seems odd as there are so many people around, but we suppose the truly stupid are everyone all the time. The Post has the details: The cops, a sergeant and a police officer assigned to the Transit Borough Manhattan Task Force, were perched......

City Council members - plus public school students and their parents - are gearing up for a fight with the Mayor over the cell phone ban in public schools. Yesterday, the City Council held a hearing about the ban, eliciting a lot of City Council and public support for removing the ban, while the Bloomberg administration wants to stand firm. In April, the Department of Education started "surprise scans" at all high schools, which allowed......

We were walking up in Gramercy before and noticed that the police had blocked off Irving Place between 15th and 16th Street. We asked an officer on the scene what happened-- he said a piece of the wall of the building across from Washington Irving fell off. First reports indicated that someone was hurt, but we were unable to verify that. Interesting coincidence: this is directly across the street from the notorious "stooling" incident......

Double-decker tour buses have in the past decade become a standard part of the average tourist's trip to the Big Apple. You see them everywhere in Manhattan and in the past few years they've even made it out to the wilds of Brooklyn. Sometimes when you're standing on a corner you can catch a snippet of the what a tour guide is telling their innocent charges, but other than that the average New Yorker has......

The Mayor and Schools Chancellor Klein were happy to announce that more city schools were coming off the state's failing list. Though seven schools were added, with only 35 schools on the list, it's a new low for the city. The Mayor touted his education reforms, including new curriculums and promoation polices, as being a factor in the improvement. We'll likely hear the soundbite "Reduced failing schools by 55% from 3 years ago" as the......

How did "Gotham" become a synonym for New York City? Amy V If you don't have a copy of The Encyclopedia of New York City you should. It's, well, an encyclopedic reference of everything about New York, including this answer to your question: Anglo-Saxon name meaning "goat town." It came into use after 1807, when Washington Irving used it satirically in several essays. Residents of the original Gotham, near Nottingham, England, were reportedly called "wise......

It gets worse with the Irving Place stooling: The woman who was hit by a stool thrown out a 6th story window at Washington Irving High School was seven months pregnant. Fortunately, doctors expect the woman to recover without any harm to the baby. Gothamist knew the kids at Washington Irving High School on Irving Place were violent, but this is crazy: A woman was injured by a stool that was thrown out the 6th floor window of the high school. "It was a big thud. Next thing she wasn't walking; she went down very fast," said real estate broker Robert Morrison, who was walking across the street. "Blood was profusely coming out the side of her head." The......
