Big fire last night on 5th Avenue in Park Slope, by E-Liz.

We thought things were a little too quiet in the Busta camp. Yesterday a Manhattan judge took back her previous plea offer of no jail for his two outstanding assault arrests, stirring things up once again.
Hoorah! The Brooklyn Paper reports that 94 year old Dominick Diomede has found a new home. Diomede was evicted by his Carroll Gardens landlord, because he didn't have a lease - he had been living there for two decades, based on the verbal agreement he had with the previous owner. Now, Diomede will move into one of non-profit Fifth Avenue Committee's subsidized apartments on Warren Street. A Good Samaritan stepped in with $2,000 for another month's rent at Diomede's current Luquer Street apartment when the story broke in The Brooklyn Paper, as there were fears the 94 year old would live in his car; the Samaritan said he wanted Diomede "to keep whatever dignity he can." And the senior received many offers for free moving, so we have a feeling the transition moving from his home of 20 years will be a little easier.

We were reading Transportation Alternatives executive director Paul Steely White's column am New York and found out that this Thursday, there's a vigil ride to honor bike riders who have died in traffic accidents. It starts at 8AM at Fifth Avenue and Warren Street in Brooklyn and ends at City Hall at 9AM, with different groups asking Mayor Bloomberg to convene a task force to examine bicylist safety and past deaths. Some other interesting facts on White's article were that based on the bicyclist fatalities since 1995, an average of one bicyclist is killed every three weeks, and two recent bicyclist deaths (including last week's in Park Slope) have been along the city's "recommended bike routes." While some of the initiatives the alliance of bike groups would like the city to undertake are very idealized (for instance, 15 MPH streets), but you laugh too much, Gothamist thinks if more drivers understand about bicyclists' rights, maybe they'll consider pedestrian rights as well.
Every morning this week we've opened the window onto our fire escape hoping today would feel like a summer, like a craving for sangria. Then, fighting back tears, we put away our new sandals. Again. Every night this week, though, we've been drinking wines like the foodies eat their mac and cheese. On the recommendation of a currently nomadic friend who will always be a Brooklynite at heart, we visited Total Wine Bar in the Slope.
