Wasn't it supposed to be sunny today? Yes it was! The cooler, less humid air that is moving this way at the leading edge of a high pressure system is a bit too cool, and not quite dry enough, to counteract the low-level moisture left over from the recent rains. That surface moisture is evaporating and then fairly quickly condensing in the atmosphere to cover the sky in gray gunky stratus clouds. There may be enough churning to produce a few sprinkles or even a snow flurry. The gray skies will keep the temperature down to the lower 40s this afternoon.
Sun To Shine On The Ides Of March
Regime Change is in the Air, Warmer Weather Arriving Soon
Welcome to the 47th straight day of snow on the ground. With lots of sun and a high near the freezing mark that snow should be less than ten inches deep for the first time in more than two weeks. The Jackson Heights igloo should also be a bit smaller by the end of the day.
Cold Spell About to End
The temperature tide may turn today. It's been colder than average for sixteen straight days now. This morning's low was three degrees above normal so today's high only has to reach 38 for our first warmer-than-normal day since December 12th. Will it happen? It will be tough. When there's snow on the ground the sun's energy goes toward melting the snow rather than warming the ground but a couple hours of sunshine this afternoon will push the mercury up to near 38.
Warmer Weekend Awaits
A brisk end to the week today as the leading edge of a high pressure system moves into the region. It will be mostly sunny, well, maybe a few harmless cumulus clouds this afternoon as we get some good mixing going on, windy, and cool with a high only in the mid 50s. As the winds die down tonight the temperature is going to plummet. All sorts of freeze and frost advisories are posted for interior regions north and west of the city. It is still a bit early for frost in town but it may get down to the lower 40s.
Change Is in the Air
It should not come as a surprise to anyone, but thanks to El Niño this past climatological winter (Dec-Feb) was cooler and wetter than normal in the city. Since daily minimums were about average the cooler weather was largely due to lower than normal high temperatures. Globally, however, preliminary satellite data indicate that this past winter was one of the warmest ever recorded.
Warmer Week Ahead and a Look Back
We've got two more cold days to contend with before a mid-week warming. Today will see a mix of sun and clouds and a high near freezing. An Alberta Clipper clips the region tonight. With little moisture this system won't bring anything stronger than clouds and an occasional flurry late tonight and tomorrow morning. Behind the clipper Tuesday will be breezy and again have a high near 32.
Warming for the Weekend
The local weather scene is taking a turn toward the quiet. The latest cold outbreak is about over. This morning's clouds will gradually give way to sun by the afternoon. The temperature will climb toward the freezing mark for the first time since Staten Island Chuck declared winter to be over.
Cold Weather Gone for Good?
Last night's squall line dumped a quarter inch of rain in just a few minutes. More importantly, the passage of the cold front seems to signal a change in circulation patterns. The cool weather that has predominated the past couple of weeks is nowhere to be seen in the extended forecast. Today won't feel very warm because of the strong wind, but the high should reach a sunny 56. More sun is in store for tomorrow and it may be a couple degrees warmer.
Was That Winter?
Well, that was a short winter. No snow, but enough numbing cold to make us mumble a series of words that the prudish Times would never dare print.
