And, for a change, some nice news out of the military! Today Senator Chuck Schumer's office announced that the New York senator (and recent PPW bike rider) has arranged to reunite a Marine Corporal with her beloved soldier dog, Sergeant Rex. The two were injured together in Iraq in 2006 and now they can spend the rest of Rex's life in peace.

Obama Visits SEALs Behind Closed Doors
President Obama met with the members of the elite Navy SEAL unit that executed the raid on Osama Bin Laden's compound and killed the terrorist leader, before giving a speech to the soldiers at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, CBS reports. The meeting, which took place behind closed doors, was held so that the president could "offer his personal admiration and gratitude for our servicemembers." The president also gave the SEALs the Presidential Unit Citation, which is "the highest such honor that can be given to a unit." It's unclear whether the "war dog" received a citation as well.
War Animals On Parade!
Like much of the nation, we've spent the past few days in this post-Osama world obsessing over the war dog who helped kill bin Laden and its fellow military canines. But should dogs really be the only animals us humans enlist in our battles? OK, so the army still has some horses and mules, but still! Inspired by Slate's gallery of war cats we've done a little research and come up with five animals right here in New York City we think should be drafted.
War Dogs Wear Doggles, Sometimes Have Titanium Teeth
[Update Below] Yesterday we demanded to see photos of the war dog that helped kill Osama bin Laden and though it doesn't look like the Department of Defense is going to be releasing the pup's name or picture (let alone its breed) that just means we'll have to make due with the tons of photos and information about war dogs (or Military Working Dogs) that hit the internet in the past twenty-four hours. For instance did you know that "The U.S. military often replaces a working dog's teeth with titanium fangs capable of ripping through enemy protective armor?"
Awww: A War Dog Helped Take Out Osama
You know what this whole Osama Is Dead story has been missing? A cute animal angle to fawn over. But no longer! See, along with the 79 commandos who raided Osama bin Laden's compound this weekend was a war dog! Yes, along with those Navy Seals was a trusty, heavily-armored, explosive-sniffing pup who, just like the Seals, was lowered into fortified property with an oxygen mask from 25,000 feet in the air.
