Coheed And Cambria Bassist Arrested For Robbing Walgreens Before Opening For Soundgarden (He Needed His Oxycontin!)

New York (well, Nyack, NY) band Coheed and Cambria is getting some press today on account of their bassist robbing a Walgreens prior to their gig opening up for Soundgarden. This all went down yesterday at 1 p.m. prior to their show in Attleboro, Mass, when Michael Todd walked into the store, showed a pharmacist a cell phone note that said he had a bomb, and demanded Oxycontin. According to TMZ his plan nearly worked, he made off with six bottles of the painkiller and was whisked away by a cab. more ›

Duane Reade Concedes To UWS, Will Remove Disco Sign

Ever since a "new look" Duane Reade opened up at West 72nd Street and Broadway, residents and local officials have complained about its extremely bright second floor LED screen. One woman said it was "almost like a strobe light... It went from a very serene environment to like being in a club. Now the drug store chain has decided to stop blinding residents and agreed to remove it. more ›

One neighbor described it to WCBS 2 "almost like a strobe light... It went from a very serene environment to like being in a club. When I’m in bed, I can still see the flashes." (Just like Kramer!) But there may be relief soon. more ›

With Walgreens and Duane Reade joining forces, it's not surprising that the former is following the lead of the latter, which has started placing fresh food items amongst its aisles of typical drugstore offerings. Where else can you buy sushi with your shampoo? Anyway, the NY Times reports that Walgreens recently brought fresh fruit, vegetables and packaged meals into a few of their Manhattan stores as part of a national pilot program. more ›

Walgreens and Duane Reade: Together At Last

Would you rather have a Walgreens or a Duane Reade on every block? Word is that the former is buying the latter for around $1.075 billion. While there aren't too many details yet (a press conference is being held today), the Duane Reade name will remain in place—so when the switch officially happens around August, you won't feel a thing. more ›

Times Square Brightens Up With 17-Story Walgreen Sign

Drab and dreary old Times Square is finally going to get some razzle dazzle starting tonight when a massive 17,000-square-foot, three-sided diagonal LED sign is turned on at 1 Times Square, right where the New Year's ball drops. Designed by D3 LED to promote the Walgreen's flagship location—not to mention other publicity-deprived corporations like Kraft, Johnson & Johnson, and Colgate—the "spectacular" display runs off almost 30 computers and uses 12 million energy efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Within the sign are 13 big plasma screens displaying "coordinated, dynamic content." You are powerless to resist! more ›
