There has been a lot of heated discussion this week after a former waitress at Tonic East wrote a controversial Craigslist account of her last day at work at the Manhattan bar. Marcy Richardson claimed that three guys consumed $120 worth of beer and food on Tuesday, and stiffed her on the check; she said she was subsequently forced to pay for the customers, while getting berated by management. A manager at Tonic refuted her story, and we were stuck in a he said/she said purgatory. We've received several emails from former and current waitresses, Tonic East regulars, and even Professors of Hospitality Management on the incident, and we thought we'd share a few of them:
Varying Reactions To The Tonic East Waitress Controversy
The Plot Thickens In Tonic East Waitress Controversy
Yesterday, we heard the story of Marcy Richardson, a (now former) waitress at Tonic East who claimed three guys consumed $120 worth of beer and food and stiffed her on the check Tuesday night. She said she was subsequently forced to pay for the customers, and ended up writing an angry screed about the experience on Craigslist—you can read the whole account here. But a manager at Tonic refuted her story, and we ended up hearing two very opposing narratives about what happened that evening and who was to blame. Now to add to this Rashomon-like saga, the mother of a former waitress at Tonic also thinks the manager is lying!
What's Worse: Stiffing Your Waitress, Or Ranting On Craigslist?
We received a tip late today with a link to this Craigslist ad, with the title, "Dear 3 black guys I served at Tonic East tonight (Midtown East)." It was written by a now-former waitress (and trained opera singer!) from Tonic East Sportsbar on Third Avenue, who claims three guys consumed $120 worth of beer and food and then stiffed her on the check. She was forced to pay for the customers, and ended up writing this angry screed about the experience. You can read her full, no holds barred account of the incident below:
Waitress Suing 1OAK Over Alleged Tip Withholding
A former cocktail waitress at exclusive nightclub 1OAK is filing a class-action suit against the establishment today, claiming she was screwed out of tips along with other workers. Tarale Wulff, 33, says 1OAK tacks a 20 percent "service charge" onto their $450-and-up bottle service, misleading patrons into thinking they were "gratuities paid to the service workers." Instead, "a percentage [is] distributed to nonservice employees, such as doormen," according to court papers obtained by the Post. Wulff, who was fired last month after a dispute involving a customer's expired credit card, is suing for unspecified damages. Two years ago 1OAK was sued by four former employees, all minorities, who claimed club owner Scott Sartiano only wanted "white girls he could f---" serving drinks.
Suit: Waitress Said "No!" to Blow Off Rear
A cocktail waitress is suing for sexual harassment, claiming that back in 2007 her slimy boss cornered her and demanded to sniff coke off her rear. When that failed, he forcibly used her shoulder! According to court papers, Nicole Slama yelled “No!” when Quo co-owner Gary Malhotra pushed into a closet and made his request. OK, off your [breast] then," he said. Again, the former Applebees waitress and full-time student declined. Recently she’d been warned that the exclusive club’s owners used the manager’s office as their personal den of iniquity.
Tom Colicchio's Craftbar Accused of Taking Tips
Celebrity chef Tom Colicchio, owner of Craft, Craftbar and Craftsteak, and a familiar face to millions for Top Chef, is being sued in Federal court by a former waitress who accuses his company of denying employees a portion of their tips and distributing the earnings among supervisors. Nessa Rapone, a Brooklyn resident who worked at Craftbar from March to May 2007, says the company also "failed to pay proper overtime compensation," and illegally retaliated by firing her when she objected to the policies. According to City Room, Rapone's lawyers say they hope other Craft employees will come forward so the can certify the lawsuit as a nationwide class action. (There are Craft restaurants in Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Ledyard, Connecticut.) Colicchio has not yet released a statement.
