Bruni one-stars Da Silvano, downgrading it from the two stars Ruth Reichl awarded the restaurant in 1998. He doesn’t quite understand its allure, though he sees occassional glimpses: “Perhaps more than any New York restaurant I know, Da Silvano illustrates... the mind-boggling inconsistency that can exist across the breadth of a menu and a series of visits.” Celebrities love the place, though, he tells us. He even called a few to ask why. Madonna didn't get back to him, but Sarah Jessica Parker did, and she favors the linguini with clams. Why the food critic for the New York Times needs a celebrity to weigh in on merits of a restaurant, we're not quite sure, but good to know that SJP thinks Frank merits a response and Madonna doesn't.

Well, one vacant restaurant at the Time Warner Center filled, one to go!

Charlie Suisman over at Manhattan User's Guide broke the French omerta on the New York City restaurants Michelin guide and listed the restaurants receiving 1, 2 or 3 stars. Only thirty-nine restaurants were reviewed. Here's a quick analysis:

Florence Fabricant reports that restauranteur Charlie Trotter and his team of developers have cancelled their plans to open a restaurant in the Time Warner Center, a.k.a. the luxury food court.

Mr. Trotter said in a telephone interview yesterday that as his restaurant's budget climbed from $6 million to $9 million to $11.5 million, the Related Companies, the center's co-developer, decided to scale back the concept and design. . . . "I didn't want to remove some of the exciting design elements to make it work," Mr. Trotter said. "And then the concept changed to something a little more casual than we originally planned."

Don't blame yourself. Gothamist was fooled too. We thought the fancy-schmancy food court at the Time Warner Center was going to be the second coming. But with Thomas Keller's Per Se going up in smoke in its first week, Frank Bruni's one-star spanking of Jean-Georges Vongerichten's V Steakhouse, and openings for Charlie Trotter and Gray Kunz still months away at best, things are looking glum on the upper floors of the Columbus Circle über-mall.

In celebration of a good friend�s birthday, Gothamist went steppin� out on the town at the new V Steakhouse in the Time Warner Center. Yes, it is located in what is, ostensibly, a mall, and yes it is indeed a steakhouse, but this is not your parents� steakhouse. The red velvet opulence is immediately striking, if not somewhat out of place. Gilded fixtures and a sea of chandeliers are tempered by a friendly and helpful staff.
