Four Loko Vigil At Union Square Inspires Self-Reflection, Jams

In the wake of the ban/neutering of Four Loko, the overly-caffeinated, sugar-saturated alcoholic drink that is guaranteed to make you blackout, vigils, wakes, and other Loko tributes are popping up all over Facebook and the web. One such protest-funeral took place at Union Square yesterday, where according to reports just under one hundred people showed up to remember the drink that took away so many memories. more ›

Rutgers Holds Vigil, Paterson Vows Cyberbullying Legislation

Last night, a few hundred students and community members gathered on Rutgers' campus for a silent vigil in honor of student Tyler Clementi, who killed himself after his roommate Dharun Ravi allegedly shared webcab footage of him engaged in a sexual encounter. Though a few officials addressed the crowd, most stayed silent, holding candles and hoping that the incident will inspire students facing similar harassment to seek help. Jenny Kurtz, the leader of the school's LGBT groups, told the crowd, "Tonight begins the process of healing." more ›

Peaceful Abortion Protesters Hold Long-Term Bronx Vigil

Forget harsh words and gory images—the pro-life movement has a peaceful new persona. As part of the “40 days for life” campaign legions of anti-abortion protesters from around the country are holding a vigil outside a Bronx women’s clinic. Bearing rosaries and signs, that read “Abortion Stops a Beating Heart,” they arrived at Dr. Emily Women’s Health Center February 17, and have returned eight hours per day, every day since, reports the News. They’re expected to stay put until closing next Sunday. "We offer them prayer, literature, roses and chocolates," said Chris Slattery, president of Christian-based Expectant Mother Care Frontline Pregnancy Centers. He calls the Bronx “the abortion capitol of America." more ›

Family of Slain Student Thanks Gothamist Readers

Family of Slain Student Thanks Gothamist Readers

Given the sometimes scurrilous nature of anonymous website commentary, it's often regrettable when the families of victims read blog posts about deceased loved ones. So we're relieved that the comments on Gothamist's coverage of the devastating mistaken-identity murder of 21-year-old Glen Wright have been heartfelt. Wright, beloved by his family and the community, was tragically slain Saturday by a gang of men at the Lower East Side's Baruch Houses, which Wright was visiting to help his grandmother. The funeral is Saturday morning (details), and those commenters who've expressed their condolences to Wright's family should know that one of Wright's sisters has, we believe, made this remark to you: "On behalf of the Glenn Wright family we just want you all to know we are aware of your concern and reading your messages. We appreciate everyone's support. Our brother was as phenomenal as described and he will be missed. We intend to keep his legacy alive and thriving through various humanitarian and community support efforts. At this time EHTP is designated as the official trustee and representatives on behalf of the 'Glenn Wright Fund.' Please direct all of your inquiries or contributions to them. Thank you from the entire family." more ›

300 Mourners Gather at Vigil for Man Mistakenly Slain by Gang

300 Mourners Gather at Vigil for Man Mistakenly Slain by Gang

Relatives, friends, teachers, and students gathered last night to mourn the tragic death of Glen Wright, who was stabbed to death outside his grandmother's East Village building because gang members mistook him for someone else. (We noted this devastating story yesterday, and like many, we're still profoundly saddened.) Wright, who died at age 21, was taking a break from helping his grandmother wash windows at the Baruch Houses on the Lower East Side when a group of men approached him. Suspect Joel Herrera, 20, is accused of stabbing Wright repeatedly in the neck; he told detectives he confused Wright with someone who assaulted one of his friends. Cops are searching for the other assailants. more ›

Vigil Tonight for Student Slain in Mistaken Identity Stabbing

Devastating: Police have told the family of a 21-year-old East Harlem man that he was fatally stabbed in the neck Saturday evening at the Lower East Side Baruch Houses because of mistaken identity. Glen Wright, who by all accounts was a beloved young man enrolled at Borough of Manhattan Community College, was there helping his grandmother clean her windows. He was getting a breath of fresh air when a gang looking for revenge for an earlier attack approached from behind, and one man plunged a knife into the back of his neck. His grandmother, Lummie Wright, tells the Daily News, "He was running for his life. He made it all the way to the front door and they chased him [and] they stabbed him once more." more ›

Sharpton Holding Vigil Tonight for Cop Shooting Victims

Sharpton Holding Vigil Tonight for Cop Shooting Victims

The Rev. Al Sharpton will hold a vigil tonight outside police headquarters to support the families of men killed by police, including recent victims Omar Edwards and Shem Walker, as well as Sean Bell, who was killed outside his bachelor party at a Queens strip club in 2006. Sharpton's National Action Network is organizing the vigil. Walker, the most recent victim, was an army veteran who was killed by an undercover cop during a drug sting in Clinton Hill; NYPD sources say the cop had earphones in to keep in touch with his team and didn't hear Walker's demand that he get off his stoop. Cops say Walker kicked the officer in the head and grabbed for his gun in the ensuing scuffle; witnesses insist the cop never identified himself. And in May, Edwards, an officer himself, was killed while chasing a man who had broken into his car. Earlier this month a grand jury declined to indict the officer who fatally shot him. more ›

Vigil For Cop's Shooting Victim Provokes More Outrage

Vigil For Cop's Shooting Victim Provokes More Outrage

Just over a week after an undercover NYPD officer fatally shot 49-year-old Shem Walker, loved ones and community leaders gathered around his mother's Clinton Hill stoop, the site of the deadly altercation in which the details still remain unclear. Bitterness over the incident was clearly in the air yesterday with the harshest words coming from Councilwoman Letitia James, who said, “I say to the NYPD, get your lies straight." The Brooklyn DA's office is currently investigating the shooting as the identity of the officer remains unknown—just that he is a seven-year NYPD veteran and is also black. A minister at the vigil yesterday said, "Police officers are paid to protect and serve, but they are also paid for their judgment. Too often it is the case that their judgment is off with people of color." Tonight a funeral will be held for Walker at Full Gospel Assembly of God with Reverend Al Sharpton delivering the eulogy. more ›
