New Yorkers couldn't walk a step without having a leaf, plastic bag or other sundry bit of city detritus hurtle towards them yesterday! It really was insanely windy. Central Park had measured winds of 46 MPH, and the winds were 48 MPH at LaGuardia Airport, causing delays there as well as JFK Airport. Almost two thousand residents in the Bronx and Westchester were without power, and the winds fanned flames of a Bronx blaze. The fire turned into a five-alarmer and destroyed four homes. And LIRR service was also affected: A tree fell on LIRR tracks in Queens and later a signal system was lost power.
Whoa-- that storm last night must have been worse than we thought: the scaffolding that wrapped 270 Lafayette completely flipped over! Verbose Coma, our favorite SoHo correspondents, were on the scene, and snapped a few pictures-- looks like a bunch of cars got smushed:

A five-alarm blaze hit a historic building in SoHo last night that injured six firefighters and one civilian. The fire was brought under control this morning by 198 firefighters and 44 units. 1010 WINS is reporting that the fire is being called "suspicious" as it started in a utility room and spread through the building's ventilation system. The historic 575 Broadway, estimated to be worth $15 million, is home to the flagship $40 million Prada store designed by Rem Koolhaas. The building structure is safe, but a FDNY representative told the Post that "It's pretty nasty."
- A Staten Island woman found her daughter murdered, naked, and stuffed under the mattress when she returned home last night. And the daughter's room was locked.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is being released tonight at midnight, and as there is nothing that the media likes better than getting quotes from kids, don't expect to escape unscathed. What better fun is there than seeing Jon Stewart trip over the word "Muggle" on The Daily Show or Rob Corddry's excellent report on Harry Potter book security? And there are a ton of Harry Potter parties this evening, from the children's book haven Books of Wonder, where illustrator Mary Grandpre will be on hand to autograph books, not to mention owls (!!!), to the corner Barnes & Noble. And for adults, McNally Robinson in Nolita is going to have food and Hufflepuff Hooch, palm readers, and Zach from the Fresh Kills DJing. Gothamist hasn't been keeping up with the Potter books, but we are eager to hear who will die, just so we can win a future game of Trivial Pursuit: The Harry Potter Edition.
Our friends at Verbose Coma let us know that Backstage had the following casting ad:

The Gates have only been with us for a few days, and already, New Yorkers are making it feel at home. A Tale of Two Cities points out that vandalism has already occured, with the above picture from Newsday, while Verbose Coma notes that the spirit of The Gates can be found everywhere. And last night, The Daily Show had senior conceptual art correspondent Stephen Colbert discuss the project...Gothamist recommends you see the repeat tonight at 7PM on Comedy Central.
Of course this makes us hungry for some bagels. If anyone is thinking of splurging to give a little New York to someone outside of the city, Gothamist loves the Zabar's NYC Essentials Gift Basket - it's $180 of bagels, lox, cream cheese, rugelach and more. Of course, you can create your own NYC Essentials gift basket for much less if you're just heading to someone's for brunch. Gothamist misses Columbia Bagels, but we'll happily head to H&H (mmm, yeasty good smells) when we're on the Upper West Side; we also covered Bagelsmith in Williamsburg. And the National Institute of Health has a particularly cruel "Proportion Distortion" interactive quiz on bagel sizes.
Only in New York, kids: Hundreds of people turn out for a showdown between a chicken-penguin named Chegwin and a chicken-skunk, Chunk, for Chove, obviously a chicken-dove, on Lafayette Street this past Saturday. Jake captured the event, noting that "after about 15 minutes of mini-riot/art-theatre, the police broke it up." Gothamist fully supports hybrid animal performance art on city streets. Will Ligers versus...um, Zebears (think stripey bears!) be next?
More at Verbose Coma. And Gothamist on the closing of another Columbia-area institution, Columbia Bagels.
