Just after 4 p.m. this gem came across the newswire: an Emergency Service Unit was on its way to 191 Chrystie Street, where nearby a police car, sans officer inside, was left in drive with the keys locked in the vehicle. We're doing our own aerial surveillance to find the nearest donut shop, and we'll update when we hear more on this amazing situation. more ›

Spotted: MTA Worker Goes Dumpster Diving

A reader sent along this photo, taken today in Kew Gardens, Queens. Pictured (aside from our tax dollars hard at work): a city worker dumpster diving and loading his urban treasures into his work vehicle. An MTA vehicle, to be exact. Maybe he was just helping out the Sanitation Department! more ›

New Bus Lanes And Bike Lanes For The East Side?

The city and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority unveiled plans for an expansive overhaul of First and Second avenues intended to make commuting by bus and bicycle faster and safer. The proposed redesign stretches from Houston Street to 125th Street, and it calls for so-called select protected bike lanes, pedestrian refuges, and the implementation of so-called select bus service and other bus improvements planned to reduce travel times by 20 to 25 percent. more ›

NYPD Calls Van Incident That Left 2 Kids Dead an "Accident"

The horrible incident where a van—left empty and running by a driver making a delivery—rolled onto a curb in Chinatown and killed a four-year-old girl and three-year-old boy, plus injured 11 other toddlers and two adults, was deemed an accident by police yesterday. The NYPD did question the van's driver, but spokesman Paul Browne said, "It turns out this was an accident," and, therefore, the driver, who was questioned and whose blood alcohol was negative, will not be charged. more ›

Compromise Sought on Reducing Cars in Prospect Park

Compromise Sought on Reducing Cars in Prospect Park

A compromise may be in sight between those who would rid Prospect Park of cars and community groups who say such a change would clog their streets. The Brooklyn Paper reports that at a Community Board 7 meeting in Brooklyn last night, Transportation Alternatives revised its call for an immediate ban, instead proposing narrowing the park to one car lane. About 600 motorists pass through every hour, and the thought of a full ban had board member Cynthia Gonzalez asking, "They want us to redirect 1,200 cars [each morning and evening] onto our streets, for how many bike riders?" Wiley Norvell at Transportation Alternatives tells us, "Our single-biggest issue with cars in Prospect Park is the danger they pose to park users. Speeding and reckless driving are rampant, and a 'road diet' would go a long way to improving the situation, without bumping up against the traffic concerns that have been raised south of the park." more ›

Windsor Terrace: Keep Cars in Prospect Park

Windsor Terrace residents were joined by Park Slope Assemblyman Jim Brennan and local community board members at a rally to decry a proposal that would completely bar cars from Prospect Park for three months next summer to study the traffic impact. Last month Transportation Alternatives delivered a petition to Mayor Bloomberg signed by 10,000 people who want the park to be totally car-free. more ›

Group Pushing for Total Car Ban in Prospect Park

Group Pushing for Total Car Ban in Prospect Park

Since Mayor Bloomberg and the DOT have been showing an interest in making the city's streets more inviting to pedestrians and cyclists, advocacy group Transportation Alternatives has decided it's a perfect time to increase pressure on City Hall to make Brooklyn's Prospect Park completely car-free. As it stands now, the hours when drivers are permitted in the park have been whittled down to two hours in the morning and two hours at night on weekdays, during rush hour. more ›

Cyclist Deaths Up, Pedestrian & Driver Deaths Down in '07

Although traffic fatalities decreased for pedestrians, drivers and their passengers in 2007, last year saw an uptick in motorcycle and bicycle deaths. The numbers announced yesterday by the mayor at a press conference in Brighton Beach add up, overall, to the lowest number of traffic deaths since the city began keeping track almost a century ago. more ›

Map of the Day: CrashStat 2.0

The pedestrian, bicyclist and sensible transportation advocacy group Transportation Alternatives has just launched a new website, Crash Maps: CrashStat 2.0, which maps intersections and streets where pedestrians and bicyclists have been hit by vehicles. It's an updated version of their previous map, and when the information is presented different depending on how closely you zoom into the map.
