Are Gangs Sharing Guns Now?

It seems that rival drug crews are not only sharing lookouts and customers (perhaps in homage to Stringer and Prop Joe's Utopian vision of criminal enterprising)—they're sharing weapons too! Police believe that they've noticed a new trend amongst gangs in NYC, with rivals sharing guns rather than heading out of state to restock their illegal firearms. more ›

Byrne Finds Himself a City to Live In

Perhaps using his Talking Heads song "Cities" as inspiration, David Byrne penned a piece for the Wall Street Journal about his ideal metropolis. Byrne lives in New York, of course, but also travels more frequently than most of us, so he's got a lot of crazy European ideas! As for his hometown, however, he says the locals wouldn't be the ideal folk to populate his city; "New Yorkers are viewed as being tough as nails, no-nonsense but with hearts of gold—or maybe just gold-plated. This might not be the sensibility I would choose if I had a choice." Don't take it personally, because he still says our nightlife is probably the best, and maybe even our security! The community has eyes and ears, and everyone behaves accordingly. In my perfect city I'd feel that sense of neighborliness—that people weren't in my business, but that I would be a familiar sight, as they would be to me." What else are we good for, New York? more ›

What's Your Urban Utopia?

Ever wish you could have the best of all the boroughs? TONY takes a look at their ideal neighborhood, with features culled from various areas in the city. The urban utopia looks a little something like this: the affordability of Inwood, the architecture of lower Manhattan, the design of the West Village, the shopping of Williamsburg, the food of Hell’s Kitchen, the bar scene of the East Village, the arts community of the LES, the diversity of Jackson Heights, the parks of Egbertville, S.I., the street culture of Coney Island, and the eco-friendliness of Park Slope. The mag also has some fun with stereotyping neighborhoods--Park Slope is still the city's baby capital, the UWS still has money, and the Staten Island dudes still enjoy their Jäger bombs. more ›
