Last Night's Action: Isles Keep Upper Hand

Last Night's Action: Isles Keep Upper Hand

Islanders 2, Rangers 1: For all the success the Rangers have had against the rest of the league, they still can't solve the Islanders. Five-game winning streak? Poof! Rick DiPietro made 18 saves and the Islanders won for the third time in three games between the two clubs. Ruslan Fedotenko and Josef Vasicek each scored in the second period, and Michal Rozsival scored a short-handed goal for the Rangers. He now has seven goals... more ›

Quick Hits: Tiki to NBC; 'Evident Progress' by Thomas

Quick Hits: Tiki to NBC; 'Evident Progress' by Thomas

  • The Knicks under Isiah Thomas as coach seem to be doing something right. They are on the verge of matching last season's win total before they even reach the All-Star break and Jim Dolan is happy. The Star-Ledger reports that Dolan told the players before Saturday's loss to the Utah Jazz that Thomas doesn't have "anything to worry about right now." While we agree that the Knicks have made progress since last year, it's hard to imagine a team that can get any worse than the dreadful '05-'06 Knicks.

Last Night's Action: Carter, Nets Outshine Cavs' James

Last Night's Action: Carter, Nets Outshine Cavs' James

  • Knicks 111, Bobcats 109 (2OT): Who would've thought that David Lee would be tipping in game-winning baskets at the end of second overtimes? It was a good night for the draft class of 2005; Lee won the game after Channing Frye poured in 30 points on 14-of-26 shooting. Only eight Knicks played -- thanks to plenty of brawl-related suspensions -- and Frye, Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford each logged over 50 minutes. With such a depleted bench, Coach Isiah Thomas will take a hard-fought win against one of the league's worst after a win over the elite Utah Jazz on Monday.

    First One in the Books

It took six tries, but Larry Brown finally has his first win as the head coach of the New York Knicks. Last night, the Knicks held off the Sacramento Kings to win 105-95. Despite leading for 19 points in the first-half, the Knicks let the Kings back into the game in the 3rd quarter. Despite letting the Kings cut the lead to 6, the Knicks didn't fold up shop like they have so many times this season. more ›

The Nets Love to Man-Hug (From Behind!)

The Nets Love to Man-Hug (From Behind!)

So, on the cover of yesterday's NY Times sports section was this huge picture of New Jersey Nets small forward Richard Jefferson (RJ!) hugging point guard Zoran Planinic after a third quarter shot against the Utah Jazz, and we thought to ourselves, "This is some hug...not that there's anything wrong with that." But these are exciting times for Nets, as exciting as being on top of the Atlantic Division five games into the season can be and cross-the-Hudson and possible cross-the-East River rival New York Knicks sucking. Jefferson has been doing well this season, and we can only hope that he, Vince Carter, and Jason Kidd stay healthy. And that Nenad Krstic can continue to score. In the meantime, Gothamist will wonder how many children were frightened by this Jason Kidd Jox Box. more ›

    Puerto Rico Shocks Team USA

The US Means Basketball team lost a stunner yesterday to the tiny island of Puerto Rico 92-73, dropping its all time Olympic basketball record to 109-3. It wasn’t the loss itself that was so shocking, never mind that Team USA had beaten Puerto Rico five times in exhibitions since July, it was the manner in which they lost. Puerto Rico held the lead for 33 of the game’s 40 minutes. more ›

    How Much Does Mediocrity Cost?

    How Much Does Mediocrity Cost?

Proving that nothing in New York is cheap, a recent study by Sportsbusinessnews.com confirmed that the New York Knickerbockers were officially the worst bargain in the league this season. When you divide the Knicks $94,395,091 payroll (highest in the league) by 39, the number of W’s they notched this season, the results show that each victory cost owner James Dolan $2,420,387. more ›
