2nd Ave Subway Blasting Will Stop In Time For More Blasting

Upper East Siders who enjoy "sleeping" and "resisting the urge to collapse into a weeping ball" may get some relief: the MTA's Capital Construction president told CB8 on Thursday that the blasting of the Second Avenue subway should cease by the end of the year. While those who live around 72nd Street may be able to retire their earplugs by New Year's Eve, the Post reports that blasting work at the site of the new station will begin on 86th street in April, and could last through 2013. They're gonna need more Sinatra. more ›

UES NIMBYs Hate Cripples For Potentially Ruining Their Block

If you've ever taken the train to 68th Street and Lexington, you know that the Hunter College stop is not exactly the prettiest. What it is is very, very busy. And handicap inaccessible. But between the Second Avenue Subway and a planned elevator on 68th Street the MTA is really trying to make things better on both fronts. Cool, right? Ha! Ever meet an Upper East Side NIMBY? more ›

MTA Halts 2nd Ave. Subway Blasts, Fires Workers Before Holiday

MTA Halts 2nd Ave. Subway Blasts, Fires Workers Before Holiday

So, there's good news and there is bad news about the ongoing Second Avenue Subway construction. The good news (for neighbors bothered by the blasting required to dig the tunnel) is that the MTA has decided to halt the blasting until December 5 while they try and figure out how to push less debris into the air. The bad news is that in order to stay close to budget while doing so the MTA had to fire some workers the week before Thanksgiving. "I have a very difficult time with that, knowing what time of year it is," MTA capital construction program executive William Goodrich said at a Community Board 8 meeting last night in which the halt was announced. more ›

1% Occupying Streets With Luxury Conversion Vans

Since its invention, the conversion van has been a vehicle of the 99%, helping the middle class conceive to the sounds of Whitesnake, providing shelter to smoke that Thanksgiving joint with uncle Lonny, and getting the kids to Water Country USA right when the gates open. Not content to let us have the one vehicle that maintains our dignity, Mercedes-Benz has been marketing their 9-foot tall, 22-foot long Sprinter conversion/cargo van to New York's upper crust. If you think their Chevy Astro-aerodynamics are ugly, it's because you're too poor to understand. more ›

Man May Have Used Pit Bull To Kill Roommate In Grisly UES Murder

An Upper East Side man was arraigned yesterday for bludgeoning his roommate to death—and police now believe he may have used his pit bull as a weapon in the attack. Shaun Dyer was arrested last month after city marshals discovered roommate David Shahda's dead body when they went to their shared apartment to deliver eviction papers. Police say Dyer "bludgeoned his roommate to death with some sort of cylindrical object," adding that there were "fresh bite wounds" on his body—but people who know Bones the pit bull say he isn't vicious at all: "He had a horrible owner, but he's a wonderful dog," one source told the Post. more ›

Billionaire Bloomberg To Trick-Or-Treaters: Fun-Size Or Nothing

[Update below] When it came to his third term election Michael Bloomberg was able to spend $174.53 per vote, but now that he's got the job (again) Hizzoner is getting stingy. At least when it comes to Halloween candy. After years of handing out full-size candy bars, this year the staff at Bloomberg's Upper East Side mansion were only handing out the "fun-size" kind. After all, sugar will kill you. more ›

Occupy Wall Street Protest 1% New Yorkers Who Hoard Wealth

The Millionaires' March, organized by the Working Families Party and NY Communities For Change, is in full swing as Occupy Wall Street protesters march to the homes of billionaires and millionaires "specially chosen for their willingness to hoard wealth at the expense of the 99%." Those lucky men include super-rich industrialist (and shadowy Tea Party backer) David Koch, News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch, real estate developer Howard Milstein, hedge fund manager John Paulson, and JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon. The march started about an hour ago, and Gridlock Sam has been Tweeting, "Lots of tourists taking photos and adding to the crowd that's right now several hundred" and "Pds got the barricades ready to roll if necessary. Will try to keep march on sidewalks but could spill onto a lane of 5 av." more ›

Start Licensing Bicyclists: UES Community Board Discusses Cyclist Regulation

After a taking a summer vacation, the anti-cyclist's favorite threat, cycling licenses and registration, returned to town last night at the Transportation Committee of the UES's Community Board 8, where a resolution "petitioning the city and state to require bicycle registration and some kind of identification for the vehicles, like a license plate" was approved. The nearly unenforceable idea now moves on to the full Community Board which will vote on it October 19th, before sending it on to City Hall and Albany. more ›

62-Year-Old Trucker Slashed In Face Over UES Parking Spot

People in New York City can get really upset if they think you've taken their parking spot. Memorabilia From Elaine's Fetches $385,735 At Auction

Not everyone was a fan of Elaine's, the famed Italian restaurant on the Upper East Side that was a regular hangout to many famous New Yorkers (among them Woody Allen). While the place was never really known for its food, the reviews could be vicious: "Restaurant was probably good before Pizza Hut came out, but Pizza Hut has since raised the bar for overpriced Italian food," Grant E. complained. So how will the Yelp users who took to the Internet to semi-anonymously complain about the now-closed restaurant feel hearing that items from the restaurant—as well as souvenirs from the late Elaine Kaufman's apartment—brought in $385,734 at auction this week, an amount that surpassed pre-sale estimates ("Of course the decor is not that exciting"—A.K. on Yelp). more ›

Alec Baldwin's Starbucks Tweet Inspires Wrath Of The Post

No one is debating whether Mayor-in-training Alec Baldwin loves Starbucks—this is Baldwin 101 stuff. But that doesn't mean that Baldwin has love in his heart for every grande-swilling barista from West End to York Avenue. On Wednesday, Baldwin tweeted that he had an unfortunate experience with one such "uptight" barista with "an attitude problem" at the Starbucks at W 93rd and Broadway. The Post picked up the "story" today, and now Baldwin is annoyed: "Today's question: What makes Helen Freund of NY Post such a sleazy, from-under-a-rock tab gnat? What drives these tab "writers?" do u care?" more ›

Chinatown Residents Struggle To Fight Real Estate Firm's Gentrification By Force

Chinatown Residents Struggle To Fight Real Estate Firm's Gentrification By Force

Our apartment has never had the heat cut off out of spite, and we've never been subjected to threats of eviction if our rent was a few days late. But perhaps that's because we pay market value for our place on Delancey, and aren't Chinese. An article in the Times details how Madison Capital, an Upper East Side real estate firm, is reportedly using strong-armed tactics to "persuade" Chinese rent-stabilized tenants on the border of Chinatown and the Lower East Side to leave to make room for gentrifying rubes like us. more ›

To commemorate the opening, three generations of the Lebewohls family, which started the institution, were on hand to cut the "nickel shtickel" (they cost a nickel years ago) salami links. Also on hand was Emmy Award winning actor Fyvush Finkel, also of Yiddish theater fame. more ›

Would You Drink This 2nd Ave Deli Apple Latke Martini Before Noon?

The sun wasn't quite over the yardarm, but that didn't stop special deli correspondent Tien Mao from knocking back an Apple Latke Martini or two at the new 2nd Avenue Deli's grand opening this morning.
