Bicyclist Critically Injured By Unlicensed Driver

At around 12:30 a.m. earlier today, a 16-year-old bicyclist was struck by a driver at Webster Avenue and East 188th Street in the Bronx. And the driver was a 23-year-old woman who didn't have a license. WABC 7 reports that the teen was critically injured and taken to St. Barnabas Hospital; the driver had a non-life-threatening injury and was also hospitalized. Woman Fatally Drives into Relatives at L.I. Water Park

A 20-year-old woman, spending the day with her family at a water park, "mistakenly drove" a Chevy Avalanche forward, striking three relatives. Yerardin Gil's action killed her aunt, Rosa Ortiz and also injured other relatives Dolcina Ortiz and Tomas Esquerdo. The incident occurred at Splish Splash in Calverton, Long Island; the three had been sitting on a grass median, having a picnic, when Gil drove over the curb and into them. According to Newsday, police are calling it a drunken-driving accident and Gil, who lives in the Bronx, was charged with both DWI and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. more ›

Teen Driver Allegedly Asked, "How is the Mercedes?"

Jacob Chubalashvili was arraigned yesterday on charges including second-degree manslaughter for crashing into an Acura, killing its two passengers immediately in Forest Hills on Tuesday morning. The Queens DA's office released some of the 17-year-old unlicensed driver's statements:

[On the morning of August 5] Chubalashvili said, “I just took the car, I didn’t have permission to take it. I smoked some marijuana before I took the car... I remember taking the car, it’s a Mercedes and jetting down the road and the next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital.” more ›

Nine-year-old Akeem Suluki was thrown across the road when a car hit him around 3:30 p.m. He had been leaving his after school program at PS 262 in Bedford Stuyvesant, and the crossing guard tried to pull him out of the Dodge Charger's way but couldn't save him.
