Man Beaten For Taking Too Long In Bagel Shop Bathroom

For anyone accustomed to bringing some reading material along for a leisurely bathroom visit, here's one to grow on: According to the Post, a man was beaten up Friday night by three other young men furious about his lengthy occupation of the restroom at a Greenwich Village bagel shop. When 23-year-old Zaaven Castelan finally abdicated the throne at Giant Bagels on University Place at 10 p.m. Friday, he found three "pissed-off" perps waiting. Police identified them as Osman Jalloh, 19, Mohamed Sow, 21, and Amadou Diallo, 21. Cops say the three pummeled Castelan when he exited the bathroom, and ran; they were apprehended soon after the incident. Reached by phone, an employee at Giant Bagels insisted he knew nothing about the incident, but added that only works during the day.

Business-Suited Thief On The Loose

A nattily-attired thief stole $50,000 in jewelry from a University Place apartment on Monday afternoon. According to the NY Post, Linda Kaplan, 76, entered her apartment and found a "thief — decked out in a black suit and tie... She demanded to know what he was doing, and he responded, 'I'm with the Fire Department,' according to cops. When Kaplan demanded to see ID, the 6-foot-2 bandit threw her down." Kaplan had left her apartment unlocked when she was "check[ing] in on a 102-year-old neighbor" and apparently the thief seized the opportunity. She screamed for help and one of the people who ran to her apartment was a painter who also saw the thief in another apartment: "Minutes earlier, the thief had poked his head in that unit but fled when he saw the worker." Police told the Post that the thief was like an "office creeper," dressed to fit in with surroundings while stealing objects.

New Restaurants on the Radar: Num Pang, La Carbonara, Tonda

Num Pang: Though it just opened Friday, this unpretentious Cambodian sandwich joint is already packing 'em in, as evinced by lines ten-deep stretching out the door. (It seems the place is closed today as the owners figure out how to keep up.) We popped in last week before the rush and were immediately won over by their hearty-but-not-too-filling coconut tiger shrimp sandwich with toasted coconut flakes ($7.50). We also hear the peppercorn catfish sandwich ($7.25) and the grilled duroc honey glazed pork ($6.75) sandwiches are worth the wait.

The Cedar Tavern has been closed for over a year now, and someday soon New Yorkers will finally get more of what they so desperately need: more condo units priced at $1.7 million and up! The famous tavern on University Place, long associated with the drunken hi-jinks of notables like Jackson Pollock and Jack Kerouac, shut down in December 2006 for “renovations” and never reopened. Promises to come back as part of the nine-story condo have gone unfulfilled; owner Michael Diliberto told The Real Deal:

“Cedar is past. Cedar is history. It means something to me. It doesn't mean something to the next generation." Diliberto and his late older brother Joe initially envisioned condos on top of the Cedar Tavern, but plans to reopen the pub were abandoned when Joe was diagnosed with fatal cancer and died two months ago. The bar closed shortly afterwards, on the day after Thanksgiving 2006.

Former President Bill Clinton may love to eat foods like osso bucco, but he's not so happy with the restaurant Osso Buco. Clinton's lawyer sent owner Nino Selimaj a letter demanding that a photograph of Selimaj and Chelsea Clinton, which had been featured in the University Place location's window, be taken down.

The Grey Dog's Coffee has been open in its Carmine Street location since 1996, and has been a neighborhood favorite for years. David Ethan, who co-owns The Grey Dog with his brother, Peter Adrian, recently opened a second location on University Place. We caught up with David over a cup of coffee (naturally).

The long awaited second location of Grey Dog's Coffee is now open for business. The University Place branch is serving the same fantastic coffee (and iced coffee), and full menu as the West Village original. Stop by and wish them well on their first day and be sure to check out the whimsical dog photos inside -- we had to restrain ourselves from running off and adopting a puppy, iced coffee in hand.

A bicyclist and three pedestrians were injured as a man driving a stolen van jumped a curb in an attempt to escape the police. The incident occurred on Eighth Street, as the police - driving one of those undercover patrol cars that look like taxis - were pursuing the van up University Place. The driver "made a hard right onto Eighth," according to the Post, which also has pictures.

The Cedar Tavern is next in the long list of establishments giving way to condo development. The tavern has been located at 82 University Place (between 11th and 12th Streets) since 1963, though it's original location, in 1866, was on Cedar Street, from there it moved to 24 University Place.

Workers at Vietnamese restaurant Saigon Grill have gone on strike - and have also been locked out by the owners - for over two weeks. Now, the workers have filed a lawsuit against Saigon Grill for a wide range of labor violations.

For those of us who may have forgotten what winter is like, the Times has a fascinating feature on past snow storms and their effects on the city. There was a time, when street cars were drawn by horses, communication and power lines were above ground, and buildings were heated by coal, that the city would be brought to a dangerous standstill by a blizzard.

Yesterday, the papers reported that a man, Martin Barreto, was found dead in an apartment at 23 East 10th Street. And now it turns out that Barreto was a former press aide under Mayor Giuliani and had been strangled. The doorman apartment building, The Albert, is right off University Place, and Barreto lived in an apartment owned by his cousin and his cousin's wife. A doorman said one to two men visited Barreto late Sunday night-early Monday morning and that Barreto said he was expecting them; the Post's information says that one man visited briefly, and then two hours later, another man stopped by for 10-15 minutes. The police were called when a neighbor, concerned since Barreto had not answered any calls or responded to knocks on the door, contacted a doorman.

Peeking through the windows in a space on 8th Street just East of University Place in Greenwich Village that once housed a Krispy Kreme, we saw a sleek, minimalist, modern looking space with long, narrow tables designed for communal eating. We looked a little more closely and saw a few more things that clued us in -- a menu filled with pan-Asian dishes, from Thai to Laotian, to Malaysian, and more, and a sign that read "Cafetasia." They've got a $7 prix fixe lunch special and the entrees hover around $10-$15 from the menu we could see through the glass, which divided items by size -- from XS to XL. Let's hope it's decent -- we're always looking for new fast eats and delivery options!

." The Daily News learns her two friends tried to stop Gluckman, who made repeated attempts to jump. Another neighbor says, "They were holding her by the legs, they were trying to stop her."

A sophomore died after falling from the 6th floor window at 1 University Place. The Daily News reports that the police call it "an apparent suicide." The student, from Brooklyn, apparently went to another student's room in the non university-owned building to jump at 10PM last night. She was pronounced dead at St. Vincent's Hospital later. It's unclear whether she lived at 1 University Place or in Brooklyn. Gothamist is in no way an expert on suicide, and we are very saddened by this death, but it does seem odd to jump from a friend's window.

The Mandoo Bar on University Place is finally opening up! NY magazine says that the downtown offshoot of the Koreatown institution has "pumpkin noodles with tofu in coconut-dill sauce, beef-and-miso stew, a seasonal prix fixe matsutake-mushroom menu, and the oxymoronic 'New Yorkstyle soy cheesecake.' One of the fun things about the Koreatown location is that you can see them make mandoo (the University Place location's kitchen is in the basement). NYC Eats has a photo of freshly made mandoo at Mandoo Bar in Koreatown as well as more about how you can order your mandoo (and other dumplings).

." The chip itself is the size of a grain of rice and uses radio frequency for ID. Whereas using the technology is something the U.S. is wary about (privacy and some such nonsense like that), Mexico is heralding it especially with the high crime rates and the company is working make sure as many hospitals as possible get scanners.
