Has New York City Lost Its Edge?
Seems like no matter where you look in New York City these days, you can't find a hooker being carted off by the NYPD's Pimp Squad. Heck, is there even a Pimp Squad arm of the Finest anymore? The AP reports that New York City's edge-factor is disappearing, noting the deaths of CBGBs, Coney Island's Shoot the Freak, and Off-Track Betting as some of the big losses. Are we doomed to become a metropolis filled with Starbucks and big box stores? The once seedy Times Square has now literally become Disney-fied, and the AP notes: "the weird, unexpected, edgy, grimy New York—the town that so many looked to for so long as a relief from cookie-cutter America—has evolved into something else entirely: tamed, prepackaged, even predictable."
Woman Caught Flipping Kittens In Brooklyn!
Oh no— woman in Prospect Heights has been caught flippin' kitties! According to the Brooklyn Paper, a woman going by the name "Unique" appears to have sifted through Craigslist ads for free kittens, only to turn around and sell them to make a profit. Louise Holmes found this out the hard way, when she let the woman adopt her two gray kittens—asking that she return them to her if she ended up not wanting them.
News Flash: Library Fines Can Hurt Your Credit Rating
Slowpokes and procrastinators beware: Late fees from overdue library books in New York could be costing you points off your credit score. The New York Times has an article today that describes how the The New York Public Library and the Queens Public Library have been using a private company named Unique Management Services, which is a collections agency that library late fines are referred to when not paid by book borrowers. One rabbi in Far Rockaway found this out when he tried to apply for a mortgage!
