While we got a dusting of snow last night (with more flurries possible tonight), Union Square got more than a few feet, courtesy of I Love NY. The faux snow is there for anyone to enjoy until 2 p.m. today (the little ones can even get snowboarding lessons), and we swung by last night as they were bringing the white stuff in. However, the only snow we spotted was this sad little pile. We contacted the organizers of the event to find out if any more was produced—if you drop by, send us your photos! And after 2 p.m., we're guessing this stuff is up for grabs, so start planning your afternoon snowball fight now.

Snow Is Coming To Manhattan This Thursday
When Mother Nature doesn't deliver, New York will bring in winter on its own. This Thursday the I Love NY crew is bringing snow to Union Square, even though it will be a balmy 45 degrees. How much snow? "Tons," we're told. They say, "Residents of New York are invited to enjoy a winter wonderland," while they learn where to find the real white stuff elsewhere in the state.
[UPDATE] Happening Now: Superman Mounts Horse At Union Square
Superman is currently atop the statue of George Washington in Union Square. And it appears that he needs a man bun. Twitter users and our handy police blotter note that a large crowd has gathered around Superman, who may or may not be shouting something about freeing humanity. Oh get a job, Superman! We know print media's in a tough spot right now but if you send your resume to BuzzFeed Ben he may bite.
Witches Coven Holding Fest To Raise Money For Permanent Manhattan Home
A coven of witches is headed to Union Square with the hopes of raising enough dough to build a permanent home right in Manhattan. According to DNA Info, the members of the Wiccan Family Temple, who are based out of the Lower East Side, are planning the WitchsFest on July 8th, which will include 50 vendors selling items like those found in The Magic Box. Probably.
Yesterday's 4 Subway Station Deaths: 3 Killed By Trains, 1 Found Dead On Staircase
While we mentioned two subway-related fatalities yesterday, it turns out two other men also died in the subway system—one of them was apparently crushed to death at the Sixth Avenue L station.
Video: Advertising Ruins Screening Of Scorsese's New Film
But at least the movie usually plays: a tipster wrote us about an unfortunate experience seeing Martin Scorsese's Hugo at the Regal Union Square last night. "This occurred after the film broke twice during the screening and we had been sitting in the theater for 3.5 hours," he said. "It's quite the mashup. Considering the movie is a tribute to film and film preservation, it was especially hysterical and at the same time a total travesty."
Photos: Lilium, Union Square's Dark New Hotel Bar
The hotel bar set have a new watering hole! Last night Lilium opened to the public in the W Union Square, replacing the hotel's longrunning basement bar Underbar. And along with the new name is a new decor of dark banquettes and mood lighting. Also, black steel lilies by the artist Scott Brown. Why lillies? To match the name, natch.
[UPDATE] Anne Hathaway Joins Large Occupy Wall Street Crowd At Union Square
A large crowd has amassed at Union Square for today's Occupy Wall Street demonstration, and celebrities walk among them! Well, one anyway. Gawker points us to this photo of Dark Knight Rises star Anne Hathaway, holding a sign and looking mad. (And cute!) What does her sign say? Blackboards Not Bullets. (On the back is Never Trust Millionaires—especially Italian ones.)
Suspected Union Square Subway Station Pervert Arrested
Police say they have arrested the man who allegedly groped a woman on the downtown 4/5/6 platform at the Union Square subway station. After the attacker pushed her forward, lifted her dress, and groped her buttocks, the victim followed her attacker onto a 6 train and took his photograph.
Majority Of OWS Protesters Arrested In Union Square Want To Go To Trial
The majority of Occupy Wall Street protesters who were arrested on September 24th during a demonstration at Union Square have rejected dismissal deals, and insisted that their cases go to trial. Over 50 of the 78 protesters—76 of whom were charged with minor, disorderly conduct violations—rejected prosecutors offers that charges be dismissed in six months time. "I was falsely arrested...It's unjust, what happened," said 47-year-old Lizzi Dierken, who claims cops "kettled" her and four other protesters that day.
Cops: Man Groped Woman At Union Square Subway Platform
Police are looking for a man who allegedly groped a 19-year-old woman on the downtown 4/5/6 subway platform at Union Square one morning last week. The woman followed the suspect onto a 6 train and took this photograph.
Video: Occupy Wall Street Marchers Trash Tribeca In Solidarity With Oakland
At least ten protesters were arrested last night as nearly 1,000 people gathered in Zuccotti Park for a march on City Hall in solidarity with protesters injured at Occupy Oakland on Tuesday. But the march soon broke off into several different marches, with pockets of a few hundred protesters parading in various directions, occasionally clashing with police as they jubilantly flooded the streets of Soho, Greenwich Village, and Union Square. In Tribeca, some rowdy protesters trashed Franklin Street, as this video shows:
George Washington The Tourist Coming To Union Square This Weekend
This summer Brooklyn artist Leon Reid IV launched a Kickstarter to support his project: dressing up the George Washington statue in Union Square as a tourist. At the time, the Parks Department said they didn't allow dressing up public statues... yet today word comes in that it's all happening this weekend. That's right, this Saturday George will be donning an "I ♥ NY" hat, a subway map, and local shopping bags... but like all tourists he's only here temporarily, leaving around 8 p.m. that night.
NYPD Reportedly Targeting Photographers At Occupation Of Wall Street
Photographs and especially videos of the NYPD's actions during the occupation of Wall Street have sparked outrage and media attention regarding the protests, which have now spanned ten days. Accordingly, witnesses, including our own photographer, tell us that the NYPD has been specifically targeting photographers and videographers for arrest. Two protestors who were maintaining the live video feed of the protests were arrested on Saturday, the first claiming that she was detained solely because she was holding a camera. "Those are the first people the police go after," protest organizer Patrick Bruner tells us. "They're always the first to get held up."
Video: NYPD Uses Pepper Spray, Force On Wall Street Occupiers
Approximately 80 protestors were arrested yesterday in conjunction with the ongoing occupation of Wall Street. The majority of the arrests, which were for disorderly conduct, obstructing governmental administration, blocking vehicular traffic, and one assault on a police officer, occurred around Union Square yesterday afternoon after nearly a thousand demonstrators marched down Broadway. Videos show NYPD officers corralling women with nets, indiscriminately discharging pepper spray, and tackling protestors.
Video: The Pimpest Ride In Union Square Park
The video below taken in Union Square this week—the rider has also been spotted around the LES as well as Park Slope—makes us think of the classic Jewish song "Dayenu" (stick with us here...):
Union Square Peepers Busted By Bushwick Artist, Inside Edition
Remember Bushwick-based artist Normal Bob Smith (aka Bob Hain), who kept track of the many weirdos lurking around Union Square, peeping at unsuspecting skirt-clad girls? Well, it turns out that his exhaustive research isn't just for entertainment purposes—Inside Edition has teamed up with Smith to help bust the creeps.
This Elephant Will Stand On Its Trunk In Union Square Through May 2012
Between the nearly indecipherable clock and that very shiny Andy statue, Union Square is no stranger to strange art (let alone strange people) so let's all give a New York welcome to the park's newest piece of public art! Miquel Barceló's 2008 piece Gran Elefandret, which is being set up today, will be living in the park through the end of May, 2012.
Never Mind About That Union Square North Restaurant!
Back in May news came down the line that the Parks Department had, after many years of fighting and much speculation, finally found a restaurant tenant for the pavilion on the North side of Union Square. Whether you liked the idea or not (and many neighbors did not) it finally seemed that this thing was happening, with former TriBeCa Grill chef Don Pintabona running the kitchen in the forthcoming City Farm Cafe. Well, forget about that. Geoffrey Croft at A Walk in the Park today reports, and the Parks Department confirms to us, that O-V Hospitality, which was going to run City Farm Cafe, has pulled out of the deal.
Video: Union Square Butt Sniffer Does It For Freedom
Union Square is host to a bevy of unique bizarros, to the point that the square has its own anthropologist, Normal Bob. And among Bob's many subjects is Roman, who has gained some notoriety because of a campaign earlier this summer to "stop ageism" by lowering the age of consent. Now, Roman has taken up a new cause: butt sniffing. Watch him explain his new "fart smeller movement" in a video taken by Joey Boots below, as well as convince two young women to let him try out his art:
Accused Union Square Bike Lock Murderer Really Didn't Do It
DSK isn't the only person getting charges against them dropped this week. DNAinfo today has the heartening story of how one persistent man was able to prove that his brother did not in fact kill a homeless man in Union Square with a bike lock earlier this summer. Though witnesses had sworn that 29-year-old Keenan Bryce was the one who threw the lock at homeless man Stanley Novak early on the morning of July 8, Bryce's brother was able to prove them wrong.
FYI: You Can't Dress Up NYC Statues To Look Like Tourists
Brooklyn artist Leon Reid IV launched a Kickstarter campaign this month in the hopes of dressing up the George Washington statue in Union Square (as he once did with Abraham Lincoln overseas). Specifically, Reid wanted to add props like an "I ♥ NY" hat, a subway map, and local shopping bags to make "a comic reflection of New York's tourist industry and spark public curiosity as to Washington's role in New York City history." Art In Odd Places was hoping to include the piece in their festival in October, and called Reid's work "very intelligent." But the city doesn't think so.
Hurled Bike Lock Kills Homeless Man In Union Square
Maybe the police need two mobile command units at Union Square? Early yesterday morning a 56-year-old homeless man, Stanley Novak, was beaten to a pulp with a bicycle lock by another homeless man, police say. Novak later died from his injuries at Bellevue Hospital.
Men Named Edgar More Likely To Take Upskirt Pics, Apparently
Two men—both named Edgar!—were arrested for taking upskirt photos of random women last week, thus highlighting one of the lesser-known dangers of summer in the city.
WikiLeaks Truck Spotted At FOX News HQ, Union Square
A truck bearing the name of one of the world's most secretive and famous websites was spotted at Fox News HQ and on the Upper West Side earlier today, and is currently at Union Square for a protest. Clark Stoeckly is an "artivist," who has taken his "WikiLeaks Top Secret Mobile Information Collection Unit around the country. Here's why:
Cops Slow Union Square's Descent Into Lawlessness
Last month folks (including us) started to wonder what was going on with all the violence and addicts who seemed to have settled into Union Square. The cops, never happy to be shamed in the papers, quickly started paying attention—going so far as setting up a mobile command center on Union Square East near "methadone alley." Since then the cops have gone on an arresting and ticketing blitz. "The park was a mess," an NYPD officer explained to A Walk in the Park. "We're going to be here a while."
Union Square Clock (Yes It Is A Clock) Is Back On Time
The Union Square Metronome, also known as "that clock thing," "those weird numbers," or the "smoldering anus," has been confusing people since it went up in 1999 and more so for the past year and a half as it got worse and worse at telling time. But all that should be in the past, as it is finally telling the correct time again, according to Related Companies, which owns the building it rests on. Not that people won't continue to come up with crazy versions of what they think those numbers mean. Like, uh, acres of rainforest destroyed annually?
[UPDATE] Someone Jumped In Front Of L Train At Union Square
[UPDATE BELOW] FDNY paramedics are currently on the scene in Union Square, where someone jumped in front of the L train around 11:30 this morning, according to various reports. The FDNY confirms the incident, but it's unclear if the person died. (A wire report says DOA, but this hasn't been officially confirmed.) One witness writes on Twitter, "Union Square freaking out. We all saw someone just jump in front of L train. Everyone is in hysterics. This is so sad so insane! Shaking."
Lady Gaga Fans Storming NYC, Next Stop: Union Square
Lady Gaga will be at Best Buy in Union Square on Monday night, so if you aren't one of her "monsters" then you may want to avoid the area completely until Tuesday. Currently her army of followers are camped outside of Rockefeller Center attempting to get stand-by tickets to SNL, which she'll be performing on tomorrow night. The fans have been camped out since Tuesday (related: it has been raining since Tuesday!), and at one point Gaga sent over pizzas to keep them nourished. One hopeful gal told the Daily News, "We are SNL fans and Lady Gaga is our idol. This is the perfect episode." What, no props for Justin Timberlake?
We Travel To Union Square To Talk To Judgment Day Believers, And Non-Believers
Today we headed out to Union Square to get the 411 on this whole rapture thing (and to buy some ramps at the greenmarket!). What do the believers and non-believers say? Here's what we learned.
