The notorious Brooklyn House of Detention – immortalized by everyone from the Beastie Boys to Jonathan Lethem – has been closed since 2003, but plans to reopen the jail at twice its previous size are still moving forward. Last year many newcomers to the steadily gentrifying neighborhood decried plans to bring back the detention center, located at the intersection of Atlantic and Smith.

Last May a bunch of Brooklyn College MFA graduates exhibited their work at the War Memorial, only to have it banned by the Brooklyn Parks Department. In the process of hauling off the artwork the Parks Department deemed inappropriate, college officials managed to damange some of it. Two Trees Management (who is moving Galapagos to Dumbo) saved the day and exhibited their show at 70 Washington Street. Meanwhile, the students sued the Parks Department, the city and Brooklyn College.

There have been murmurs of Galapagos moving from its current space for a while now. The Burg even did an entire episode about saving it. From that show:

The future development of Brooklyn's DUMBO district could be shaped by the results of a public hearing scheduled for today at 1 Centre Street in Manhattan. Although the Landmarks Preservation Commission's online calendar does not list such a meeting, the Gowanus Lounge and DumboNYC are spreading the word about this important first meeting, which could initiate the process of protecting DUMBO as a historic preservation district. Such a designation would require property owners to obtain special approval for renovations, demolitions, or additions to existing structures.

Back in 2003, when Mayor Bloomberg sold the Board of Education's old headquarters at 110 Livingston Street in Brooklyn, people were fixated on the horrors of bureaucracy. Nicknamed "The Kremlin," 110 Livingston represented everything that was wrong with the city, and one person even told the NY Times, "If there is an opposite of nostalgia, you'd have to apply it to 110 Livingston Street."

After its eviction from a city park, the Brooklyn College MFA graduates will get to another chance to exhibit their work, this time at 70 Washington Street, thanks to Two Trees Management which manages 70 Washington Street and 110 Livingston Street. The Brooklyn Parks Department freaked out when seeing art from "Plan B" at the War Memorial and unceremoniously hauled the works away (causing some damage as well).
