Two Adults, One Child Killed In "Possibly Suspicious" Bronx Fire

Earlier this morning, a two-alarm fire ravaged a Bronx two-family home, killing a 36-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy. The blaze, which was called "possibly suspicious," occurred on Prospect Avenue in the Belmont section around 3:30 a.m. The FDNY said, "There were heavy fire conditions on both the second and third floors of a three-story brownstone. When we arrived, numerous people on the street were screaming." And another city official said the building was illegally occupied. more ›

Quick-Thinking Family Saves Themselves From UES Fire

An UES family saved themselves from a devastating fire in their East 80th Street townhouse early yesterday morning, a block from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The parents, both banking executives, managed to get all four of their children—George, 9, Joe, 8, Teddy, 6 and Lulu, 4—to the roof of their duplex, leaping onto the roof of a neighboring building to escape the flames. "This was the scariest thing in my entire life. It was terrifying. The place was going down, and we knew it," said Sally Bednar, a chief operating officer at Morgan Stanley, who woke her husband after smelling the smoke. more ›

Fire Destroys Village Paper, Cause Investigated

    

Yesterday morning, a two-alarm fire tore through the Greenwich village party supply store Village Paper. Over 100 firefighters were able to get the fire under after about an hour—part of the ceiling collapsed, leaving two firefighters with minor injuries—but the store was ruined. Owner Sun Wong spoke to the Daily News while in tears, "I worked so hard for this store, for my family. I'm so sad right now. I have three little ones. What am I going to do now? Amid the snow storm barreling into the NYC region today, firefighters battled a two alarm fire at Village Paper (which one Yelp user described as, "Like [Halloween], Village Paper is colorful, overstimulating, a little creepy, and wonderfully foolish") in Greenwich Village that began after 7 a.m. Readers sent us these photographs of the scene—one said, "There was a huge bang at around 7:10am this morning that sounded like a tire exploding" and that the FDNY was on the scene within minutes. A two-alarm fire broke out at 55 Harrison Place in Bushwick, Brooklyn around 4:48 a.m. this morning. According to WCBS 2, one person, who was "one of two people trapped by flames on the second floor," died while "Four other people were injured; three with minor injuries and one with more serious injuries." more ›

Last night, a two-alarm fire broke out at a site at N. 9th and Wythe Avenue in Brooklyn, apparently at the Rosenwach Wood Tank Company. Smoke could be seen from not only neighboring buildings but from the East Village as well. Fire Hits Commercial Buildings in Flushing

Early this morning, WABC 7 reports that a "suspicious" two-alarm fire "tore through six businesses" in Queens this morning--in the Flushing section, on Roosevelt Avenue near Main Street. Heavy winds may have also helped spread the fire, which firefighters reportedly tried to battle from the inside of the stores (three suffered minor injuries). Additionally, "water used battling the blaze collected on the track of the nearby No. 7 subway line," which has caused some delays on the 7--and the fire has caused some rerouting of MTA buses--check the NYC Transit site's Service Alert site. more ›

Two-Alarm Fire Ravages UWS Townhouse

Doormen noticed a townhouse on West 73rd Street was on fire and ran across the street to alert the residents. WCBS 2 reports that one resident is grateful, noting how the room she was just in exploded soon after. Eight firefighters and one civilian had minor injuries and it's unclear what caused the blaze. Another resident, whose belongings were destroyed and cat was killed, suspects it's the wiring, saying the building's landlord/owner "refused to fix it and now I'm homeless." Child, Man Die During Upper Manhattan Fire

A two-alarm fire broke out at a 6-floor apartment building on West 148th Street and Riverside Drive around 8:40 p.m., and a man and a 5- or 6-year-old boy died after jumping from the sixth floor. The man, believed to be the boy's godfather, was pronounced dead at the scene while the boy apparently went into cardiac arrest and died at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief John Scudnik said they couldn't get to the fire escape, "The conditions were probably so unbearable that he probably chose to get out on the window ledge and fell." more ›

Fire in Flatbush Apartment Building Injures 16

An early morning two-alarm fire in an apartment building at 1001 Ocean Avenue (near Newkirk) in Brooklyn injured several residents. WABC 7 reports seven members of the same family were seriously injured--two children suffered first- and second-degree burns--and a "pregnant woman and a 56-year-old man" jumped from the second floor. Some firefighters were also injured in the blaze. more ›
