Dispute Between Livery Cab Drivers Spurred Shopping Cart Attack

Two men remain hospitalized after being injured by a shopping cart that was apparently thrown at them from the third floor of a Bronx parking garage. Lounceny Camara, 52, and his friend, Sagne Ibrahima, 30, who had been standing at the Bronx Gateway Center shopping center during the Monday incident, are both in stable condition. The police are continuing to investigate the attack and some think that a fight over a livery cab fare sparked the attack. more ›

Bald Eagle In "Turf Battle" With Ospreys On Staten Island

It's the battle of the century: a bald eagle spotted on Staten Island is dueling it out with a flock of ospreys for food and "prime treetop space" in Chapin Woods in Dongan Hills. And things are getting intense! One local birdwatcher described the eagle taking on six ospreys, who were "switching trees and fighting over fish," while another neighborhood resident said he saw an eagle chasing after a large osprey who had caught a fish—they were both "huge, and flying so fast!" he reported. more ›

Gourmet Food Truck Turf War Ruins Prime Spot for Everyone

Gourmet Food Truck Turf War Ruins Prime Spot for Everyone

A turf war between two food truck vendors has ruined a prime location for all the trucks that used to park on the south side of 48th Street (between Sixth and Seventh avenues, outside the building in which The Wall Street Journal's located). Midtown Lunch says the turfuffle started on Tuesday, when the hot-headed owner of the Frites N Meats truck, Vadim Ponorovsky, arrived to find the Rickshaw Dumpling truck horning in on his business. You may recall Ponorovsky from the notoriously nasty email he sent to staffers at his Meatpacking district restaurant Paradou. He didn't disappoint this time, either. more ›

Street Food Vendor Slashed in Halal "Mafia" Hit

Street Food Vendor Slashed in Halal "Mafia" Hit

The turf war between between rival food vendors got bloody Wednesday when a halal chicken vendor allegedly cut his rival's arm on East 37th Street. We've previously heard about the feared "Halal Mafia" and wondered how far they'd go in defending their turf. All the way, it seems: Walid Osman, 32, says Halal chicken vendor Mohamed Hanafi threatened to kill him. The trouble started in August, when Osman, who'd previously peddled hot dogs, started selling chicken. When he refused to stop, Hanafi moved his cart right up in Osman's face, where he started selling chicken for half what Osman was charging. The tension finally boiled over Wednesday, when a Hanafi employee, Farajat Yehia, allegedly slashed Osman across the arm with a butcher knife. That employee and Hanafi's business partner were charged with assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. But Hanafi tells the Post that Osman used to work for him and signed an agreement that he would never run a chicken cart. He also says Osman cut himself. Osman, who was treated at the scene, insists he signed the agreement under duress. He's vowed to return to his spot today and keep fucking with that chicken guy. more ›
