Last night was an unfortunate one for drivers. Not that there aren't a lot of accidents all the time sadly, but the early hours had some particularly upsetting stories:

Looks like all the pleas and protests from architectural preservationists didn't help: the Tunnel Garage demolition has begun. They've already taken out the terra-cotta Model-T emblem on the front, and started demolishing the top story. The interior is totally cleared out, and it looks like workers have begun hammering away at the internal ramps. At this rate, the lot will be entirely empty in a week or two.
Remember the Save the Tunnel Garage story from back in December? Well, we've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the signage on the building has been removed, revealing the beautiful mosaic work-- check out that car! The bad news is that the building is now surrounded by scaffolding, and is probably going to be knocked down. Let's hope that if the Garage gets destroyed, someone will preserve the art. And if you're in SoHo, definitely visit the garage-- it's on the corner of Thompson and Broome.
Over the weekend we stopped by a protest organized by Friends of the Tunnel Garage. Apparently developers are trying to tear down the garage, which was built in 1922 and sits at the corner of Thompson and Spring Broome Street at the edge of SoHo. While the garage looks a little run-down these days, in years past it was quite beautiful (for a garage!)-- featuring details like "terra-cotta polychromy" (?) and signage (there is supposedly a picture of a Model T under the "Park Here" on the rounded corner of the building) Our favorite detail: the G in "Garage"-- they really knew their fonts in the 1920s!
