A pedestrian was struck on Canal Street by a truck, and a witness at the scene said, "His face was all bloody. His knee was all bloody. His pants were ripped up." The witness did not see the victim being hit by the truck, described as a large oil tanker, but he did see the truck speeding east.
Pedestrian Struck By Truck On Canal Street
Photos: Semi-Truck Vs. Subway Station
The photographer who sent in the photos, Amin Torres, says simply, "This truck trailer seems to have touched the underneath part of the train under the J, M, Z line at the intersection of Broadway and Myrtle causing the middle of the truck to bend in." You know, we predicted this sort of thing happening as soon as the MTA slashed its budget for elevated subway station buttering.
Photo: Sanitation Truck Makes One Hell Of An Exit... From Garage's 3rd Floor
Well, that is one way to get out of a building! The FDNY just Tweeted possibly the most dramatic photo you'll see all day. And you know what makes it even more dramatic? There is a man inside that dangling truck!
There Is So Much Free Ice Cream Happening In The City Right Now
There's a lot of free ice cream happening lately, and we're here to make sure you become well acquainted with some of it. It's not even National Ice Cream Day! (That's July 17th, by the way.) Okay so, first up, the USA Network has some very confusing promotion going on today which boils down to them handing out 80,000 free Häagen-Dazs Sundae Cones. There will be branded ice cream carts, bikes and scooters, possibly in the Times Square area... the details are sketchy, but we're trying to find out more information and will up date when we do. In the meantime, ring up (or Tweet up, as it were) Ben & Jerry's. Their free ice cream truck is back in the city, and you can beckon them to you.
Graffiti Collectibles: They're A Thing
Missing the days that every surface of every moving thing in New York City was covered with graffiti? There's a new collectible to help you get through these squeaky clean modern times: the graffiti truck! The creator of this thing tells us he's "dropping a new truck with NYC artists 2esae and Ski (these guys kill it around NYC)." But where's the Banksy and Shepard Fairey toys?
Mayor Bloomberg Kicks Off Anti-Illegal Gun Truck Tour
Mayor Bloomberg has been increasingly vocal about amending gun laws ever since Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot by a man who should not have been able to pass a background check. His Mayors Against Illegal Guns group started a petition on Fix Gun Checks, calling for Congress to require a background check for every gun purchase in America, and now they're taking their show on the road. Bloomberg said at the launch, "It is time for Washington to listen to the 250,000 Americans that have signed our petition and take action: since the Tucson shooting more than 1,300 people have been killed with guns in the United States and that number continues to grow."
Truck Driver Will Abide By Alternate Sides No Matter What
As the city's unrelenting snowfall came to an end (for now), the city reinstated alternate sides parking rules, frustrating a good many citizens who complained that gigantic piles of snow were taking all the good spots. But this truck driver never says die! Reader Luke Mathews sent us this photo of a truck completely determined to keep his parking spot come hell or high snow, and he makes a good case for investing in four-wheel drive. Also, from now on we're calling any residual snow piles "Bloomberg's Alps."
Driver Who Killed UES Pedestrian Gets Harsher Summons
After 21-year-old Jason King was fatally struck by a truck backing up through an intersection on East 86th Street, driver Anthony Regisford was issued a summons for failing to secure a load and another one for not having a medical card. But Assembly Member Micah Kellner, author of Elle's Law, pointed out there are laws "on the books for the police and the DA to use as tools to punish reckless driving and take dangerous drivers off the road." Well, ask and ye shall receive, because the driver has also been hit with a summons in violation of Vehicle Traffic Law Section 1146.
Man Crushed To Death By Pickup Truck In Tragic Accident
In a terrible accident yesterday, a West African immigrant was crushed to death by the Toyota pickup truck he was trying to ship home in a container truck. According to witnesses, Abdul Barry, 49, was standing inside the container when chains that suspended the truck above him snapped, and the vehicle crashed down on him. Barry moved to the US in 2005, working seven days a week selling T-shirts and socks in Harlem to send money back to his family. Even more sadly, he just had a child who he had never seen: "His wife just had a baby - his second daughter - one month ago...He's never seen his second child. Now he'll never see her." said his cousin, Issie Barrie.
Sanitation Truck Crashes Into Train, Injuring Two Workers
This has not been a very good few weeks for the Sanitation Department. Alleged blizzard work slowdowns, slow plowing, stuck plows, toppling gravestones, lingering garbage... and yesterday, two workers "crashed their garbage truck into a slow-moving freight train along the Brooklyn waterfront," according to the Daily News.
City Bus, Van and Truck Crash in Queens, No One Killed
Miraculously, no one was killed in yesterday's Queens Village crash involving an 18-wheeler truck, a minivan, an SUV and the Q43 (or Q46) bus. The crash took place at the intersection of Hillside Avenue and the Clearview Expressway, where witnesses say the bus was "zooming from the ramp" at about 60 mph. It then slammed into the van and the SUV, which produced a chain reaction that left the 18-wheeler knocked against a building. The witness told the Post, "I thought people were dead. Good thing there were no people on the street."
[UPDATE] Driver Issued Summonses After Fatally Hitting Pedestrian
[An Assemblyman wants the Manhattan DA's office to investigate—UPDATE BELOW] Yesterday, 21-year-old Jason King was fatally hit by a Mack truck backing up through an intersection on the Upper East Side. Driver Anthony Regisford was issued one summons for failing to secure a load and another one for not having a medical card, and police say that King may have been unable to hear the truck because he was listening to his iPod. However, critics are saying that shouldn't be an issue, especially because of a little thing called Elle's Law.
[UPDATE] Man, Possibly Listening to iPod, Fatally Hit By Truck
A 21-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a Mack truck while crossing E. 81st Street and Madison Avenue this morning, and police believe he may have been distracted by the music emanating from his ear buds. The truck backed into him, dragging him for about 30 feet, and police found an iPod Nano and headphones on the pavement near the victim. The 51-year-old truck driver remained on the scene and was not charged. In 2007, State Senator Carl Kruger proposed a ban on using iPods while crossing the street, saying users are "tuning out the world around them."
Spotted: Subway-Truck Hybrid!
A reader took the above photo, and tells us he "saw the truck as I came out of the Vernon-Jackson 7 train station in Long Island City" last Friday evening. Wonder what the cargo is! Meanwhile, the real subway had some A-list cargo yesterday, as common straphangers spotted Madonna taking New York City public transportation! TMZ has the photographic proof of the Material Girl riding the rails.
Tomorrow: Celebrate The Waffle!
You guys, tomorrow is National Waffle Day! Seems like just yesterday it was International Waffle Day. Anyway, this means Wafels & Dinges is the place to be. The truck will host a pageant and be crowning Miss Wafel & Mister Wafel, as a centerpiece to their all day waffle celebration. The winners will get a full year of free waffles—which sounds like a very dangerous thing to have access to.
Truck v. House: Truck Wins
A 10-foot high box truck slammed into the side of a house in Hawthorne, NY at 10:50 a.m. after veering off Route 9A. Luckily, no one was badly hurt. Driver Anthony Franciosa, 18, claimed he fell asleep at the wheel, jumped a curb onto Beverly Road and slammed into the side of 211 Beverly. The impact of the truck moved the house about a foot and a half.
Truck Vs. Elevated Train Platform In The Bronx
Truck oops: Notify NYC sent out this message, "A vehicle struck a subway platform at 172nd St. and Southern Blvd. in BX. Disruptions on the 2 and 5 trains." And the MTA's NYC Transit Twitter says, "Crews working to cut trailer apart and away from the El @ 174th St & Southern Blvd (2,5). Hope to restore service soon after." But don't fear, 2 and 5 train riders, there is service...but there are delays: "2 & 5 restored in the Bronx between 149th St-Grand Concourse & E. 180th St. Truck removed, cables repaired. Expect delays."
Staten Island Grandmother Killed By Truck
Theresa Alonso, a 64-year-old grandmother in Staten Island, was fatally struck by an 18-wheeler yesterday while crossing Port Richmond Avenue. Returning to the Buckingham House retirement center for a BBQ she had helped plan, Alonso was still in the middle of Port Richmond Avenue when the light turned green (hip surgery forced her to walk slowly). The driver said he didn't see her over the hood of his truck.

Day tickets and full weekend long packages are still available if you want to escape to the mountains for a few days. Here's organizer Robin Bennett to tell you a little more about what to expect up there.
Super Taco Truck Beats Cold With Fancy Winter Vestibule
Well buenos dias, Senor, welcome, welcome to Super Tacos! Step right in out of the frigid February air. Do you have a reservation? No? Well, let me check the availability... Oh, I'm afraid there won't be any tables opening up tonight—in fact, ever, since we don't have any—but if Senor does not mind standing, we would be happy to accommodate. Did you find out about us from our rapturous review in the New York Times? Regrettably, we were not awarded a single star, despite being named the Upper West Side’s favorite taco truck, but perhaps a re-review is in order, now that we have this warm, inviting vestibule!
Postal Truck Lodged Under Overpass
Whoops! Aside from long lines, lost packages, rodents, and closed branches... the United States Postal Service has now taken their fail factor to the streets. A reader sent in this photo of a postal truck leaving the dock at 10th Avenue, attempting to make a very sharp turn and getting wedged under the overpass on 30th Street at 9:30 this morning. Check out another angle after the jump...
Astoria Crash Leaves Sanitation Worker Dead
A crash between a tractor-trailer truck and a sanitation truck left one dead this morning in Queens. The Daily News reports that the Mack truck turned onto Ditmars Blvd. at 35th St just before 8 a.m., hitting the sanitation truck and killing Frank Justich, who was riding on the back of the truck. Justich was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital, but investigators do not suspect any criminality on behalf of the Mack truck driver. Justich had worked for the Sanitation Dept. for 11 years, and has been the tenth worker to die on-duty since 2003, according to the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association.
Map of the Day: Playgrounds And Truck Routes
Here's a way to find out if your neighborhood is kid-friendly. The website PlayaroundNYC has assembled a map charting the locations of playgrounds and their distances from major and minor truck routes. The areas that are darker in color have greater access to playgrounds that aren't surrounded by truck routes than the areas that are lighter in color. Though the map doesn't account for other variables impacting playground quality — like quality of play equipment, population density, or the availability of park restrooms — it's an interesting way to see how different parts of the city cater to children. According to the folks responsible for the map, "[i]t's unfortunate that the easiest locations to place playgrounds are on land left over from major highway construction rather than locations that are more appropriate for supporting young New Yorkers."
Is NYPD Withholding Information About Cyclist's Death?
Last month 33-year-old Brit-born Brooklynite Solange Raulston was struck and killed by a truck while biking on Nassau Avenue (at the intersection of McGuinness Blvd) in Greenpoint.
The Definition of D'Oh: Truck Stuck Under Elevated Subway Tracks
A tipster spotted this truck stuck under the Q train subway station on Avenue J in Midwood this morning around 8:45 a.m. We're told "the truck was all crumpled and the fire department had to come out." We're guessing at this point they're just waiting for a giant stick of butter.
Chinatown Business Struck Again By Vehicle
Yesterday, a truck hit a Chinatown business near the Manhattan Bridge—and it was the second time this year wireless store has been hit. The Post reports that a "runaway cement truck" which "apparently lost its [brakes] at about noon on Canal Street near the Manhattan Bridge, careen[ed] out of control along the busy street" and "sideswiped half a dozen cars -- including one filled with children -- and then crashed through the front of a wireless-phone store." (See this picture.) One witness said of the scared children, "They were very distraught. It was traumatic. The truck was bearing down on them. They were both crying." Ten people (no pedestrians) had minor injuries; no criminality was involved.

Shortly after a reader sent in these photos from the accident, which occurred on Bleecker and 8th Avenue, showing the truck was a City Parks vehicle. The vicitim was unconscious and transported to St. Vincent's Hospital, and there has been no additional word on her condition.
Baby Lamb Saved from Bronx Slaughterhouse
Oh baby! Last night this cute little lamb was born on a transport truck on the way to a Bronx slaughterhouse. Luckily, a good samaritan and Farm Sanctuary swooped in and saved him, eventually bringing the little guy to their shelter in Watkins Glen, NY. Sadly, the mother didn't have such luck, and went to slaughter with the rest on board the truck.
"The minutes old lamb was discovered by a Good Samaritan who was shopping at an Italian market just a few doors down from the slaughterhouse when the truck arrived. Wanting to get a closer look at the sheep as they were unloaded, the woman walked over to the truck and was shocked to discover a newborn lamb among the herd, as well as a less fortunate lamb who had been trampled to death during transport.more ›
Kent Bike Lane Causing Williamsburg Truck Trauma
The saga of the Kent Avenue bike lane continues! First the Orthodox Satmar Jews in South Williamsburg objected to the old bike lane because of the influx of immodestly-dressed female cyclists, then local merchants complained that customers and delivery trucks had nowhere to park. Barricades were threatened, fake detour signs were put up, and clowns rushed to the scene. Responding to the whining, the DOT ripped up part of Kent and changed it to northbound-only traffic, creating a dedicated bike lane buffered by parking spots. And everyone was happy some were placated!
Shameless Bike Lane Block, Courtesy Rite Aid Truck
Believe it or not, we don't publish every egregious bike lane blocking photo that lands in our inbox, but this one's just too delicious to pass up. Taken on the Eighth Avenue bike lane, which is separated from traffic by a row of parking, exhibit A shows a Rite Aid tractor trailer transforming the bike lane into an unloading zone. The reader who sent it tells us this was by the Rite Aid on West 20th Street. Though it's probably tempting for cyclists to react self-riteously to such a photo, one wonders how businesses are supposed to receive deliveries with such a bike lane design. Certainly, they can't be expected to park around the corner and use a hand truck!
