Could Apple be planting a seed on a location near Lincoln Center? The Meatpacking district Apple store still has that new-store smell as Apple fever extends north. According to the Post, Apple is looking to take over space at the northwest corner of Broadway and West 67th, where there's currently a two-story Victoria's Secret store.

So do armed guards, barred doors, and locked cells. That's what the City is hoping anyway, as it floats plans to have developers build condos contiguous to an expanded Brooklyn House of Detention. Testing the limits of desirability of New York real estate, the Dept. of Corrections has been considering building retail space and restaurants on the first floor of the jail for the last year (Prison Tower Records? Lever Big House?). But with rents and real estate prices verging on the criminal, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz thinks that people will be happy to not only eat and shop there, but to live next to the jail, and the DOC is considering building residential, hotel, or office buildings that directly abut an expanded Brooklyn House of Detention.

The city is seeking a developer interested in supervising the expansion and renovation of the jail and in owning the retail space on the street level of the complex, as well as the new residential or commercial buildings.

The bookstore chain Barnes & Noble confirmed that the Astor Place location will be closed due to high rents. A spokesperson told the Post, "We'd like to stay there, but we really can't afford it."

Closing arguments were made in the trial of Paul Cortez, who is accused of murdering of his ex-girlfriend, Catherine Woods. Cortez's defense attorney Lauren Miranda tried again to suggest that the bloody thumb print, which matches Cortez, was from menstrual blood from lovemaking during Woods' period. She also reiterated that Woods' ex and roommate at the time, David Haughn (who, like Cortez,wears the same size as a bootprint found at the scene), could have been the killer. She called the yoga teacher a "gentle, caring, peaceful" man who had too much going for him to commit the crime.

Better redeem any Tower Records gift certificates you have soon, because the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in recent years. And what's more, many people have been speculating about its chances for survival, since various labels have stopped sending product because Tower hasn't been paying its bills. Huh, is that why we've been having trouble locating certain products, or is the BBC deluxe DVD of Pride & Prejudice just always sold out? Various publications have suggested that Trans World Entertainment, which owns the f.y.e. stores, Sam Goody, Coconuts, and Suncoast may buy Tower.

The Thrills have a great new album, Let's Bottle Bohemia (I hear a bit more pop and less California country), and are stopping by Irving Plaza tonight. The much-buzzed-about and Mercury Prize-nominated band The Zutons are opening the show. If your wallet is a little light these days, don't fret. The Thrills are playing at Tower Records at 4th and Broadway tonight at 6pm.
