Around 5:30 p.m., tornado warnings were issued for Brooklyn, Queen and Staten Island. While it's unclear whether a tornado did touch down (the National Weather Service's Doppler Radar indicated a tornado did touch down in Brooklyn or maybe on/near Staten Island), many people noted hail and the sky turning an ugly green before sheets of rain pounded the city. Numerous trees have fallen, causing street closures, accidents and mass transit delays. After Tornado Warning, Major Damage In Brooklyn, Queens
Last Night's Storm, Lightning Action! (With Video)
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for most of the city last night as a fast-moving storm swept in and the city recommended residents "stay away from windows." Lightning struck repeatedly for what felt like a pretty long time (10-15 minutes or so?) and reader Kelles described it as "turn on a strobe light, then pour out a bucket of water in front of you." Other readers shared their photos with us—see them above.
Tornado Warning In Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, The Bronx!
We knew there would be rain, but check out this message from the Office of Emergency Management: "Alert issued 7/23/10 at 8:20 PM. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning until 9:00 PM for Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx. Immediately go indoors and/or to the lowest floor of your building for shelter. Stay away from windows." There's also a flood advisory for the city. But the lightning show has been nuts! No Tornado--Just Other Wild Weather
Last night, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the area. While we didn't see one, there were "heavy rains, hail and lightning" enough to mess up commutes on highways and the rails. Metro-North, LIRR, and NJ Transit all faced delays. Additionally, the rain prompted the Nassau County Health Department to close its beaches as a precaution--they may be close tomorrow, too (call and check).
Hold onto Your Hats: Tornado Warning in Effect
Um, those deathly looking clouds you see? Probably why a tornado warning is in effect. According to WNBC, the warning is for "Manhattan, the Bronx and Eastern Bergen counties until 5:45 p.m. and for Southern Westchester County until 6 p.m."
