Yesterday, the AP reported that an off-duty cop was arrested for DWI in Queens—and now there are details. According to charges, the Post reports that veteran detective James O'Connell "was busted...for drunken driving after he smashed into a tollbooth at the Midtown Tunnel in Queens...[He] was allegedly driving home from a holiday party when he smacked into the lane’s gate arm at the toll plaza around 2 a.m." more ›

Truck Driver Lost Brakes At Verrazano Toll Booth

Some details about the truck that somehow crashed into a booth at the Verrazano Narrows Bridge toll plaza yesterday. A source told the Staten Island Advance the "driver apparently lost his brakes, then jumped the curb at the plaza, near lane 17, and struck the toll booth... The accident caused traffic tie-ups heading into Staten Island." The driver was not pinned, though his door was "pressed against the toll booth"—it turns out that emergency responders "were hesitant to remove him through the passenger-side door" due to the driver's shoulder injuries. more ›

MTA Looks to Remove Toll Booths at Bridges and Tunnels

The MTA has put out a request for proposals to transform its current toll plaza to an all-E-Z Pass and cashless payment system. Non-E-Z Pass users would be charged with license plate cameras (the same idea floated in congestion pricing), and NY1 says the MTA wants to "get rid of all toll booths in the next four years." The MTA's Bridges & Tunnels division has been in the news lately, from a jury awarding a former employee $735,000 in a discrimination case to the firing of a toll worker over his dispute with a customer. more ›
