The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit earlier today to bar AT&T's purchase of T-Mobile USA for $39 billion, the AP reports. Deputy Attorney General James Cole said in a press conference that the deal would culminate in "tens of millions of consumers all across the United States facing higher prices, fewer choices and lower quality products for mobile wireless users." Aw, c'mon! We stockpiled nights and weekend minutes in preparation for AT&T-world-order for nothing?

As opponents fight tooth-and-nail to keep Walmart out of New York (some pols are threatening to not sell a plot to Related unless they get written assurances the retailer won't end up there) hundreds of other chains have already plastered the city, a new study from the Center for an Urban Future hammers in. Yes, we knew there were more Subway shops than subway stops in Manhattan (163 stores, 147 stations) but who knew there are now almost as many Dunkin' Donuts in the city as there are stations in the whole system (466 stores, 468 stations)?
Judge: UES Must Deal With Cell Phone Towers
After suing their condo board over unsightly cell phone towers that were installed on their roof without their permission, residents of Salem House on East 81st Street have been ordered to suck it up. A judge ruled that T-Mobile may continue installing the towers, and that residents have "no basis to assume that the installation of these facilities will cause harm to the users of the roof." But what of their beautiful roof deck?!
Three Men Wanted For Cellphone Store Crime Spree
Police have released photos and surveillance footage of three men accused of stealing cellphones from 16 AT&T and T-Mobile stores. NY1 reports that the trio has been cutting security cords and running away with the phones since December in a crime spree that spans across Manhattan and Queens. According to 1010WINS, the perps have displayed a knife in some incidents and used force, though no injuries have been reported. The three men were last spotted robbing an AT&T store on Broadway in SoHo on Tuesday. The suspects are described as between 19 and 25 years old, and about 5'8'', 5'10'', and just over 6' respectively. Down and Out: T-Mobile Service Outage
A few readers have emailed us about T-Mobile service being out. A message board indicates the problem is in Manhattan, but a T-Mobile user in Brooklyn is having voice issues, but not data ones. Update: T-Mobile says the problem--which affects text, voice and data-- covers all of the greater NYC area (which includes the five boroughs and NJ, depending on how the call is routed). Engineers have been investigating the issue for the past few hours; there is no estimated time when service will be back.
