The Knicks Keep Dealing

The Knicks Keep Dealing

The Knicks continued the reshaping of their roster on Thursday with two trades. In the bigger deal, they acquired Larry Hughes from Chicago for Jerome James, Tim Thomas and Anthony Roberson. In the smaller deal they acquired Chris Wilcox from Oklahoma City in exchange for Malik Rose. Hughes gives the Knicks a solid scorer who can also play defense. Wilcox gives the Knicks a true big man. The trades should improve the team this season and shipping Jerome James off to the Bulls ends one of the worst free agent signings ever — 700 minutes on the court with the Knicks for $24 million. more ›

Knicks' Trade of Zach Randolph Hits A Snag

Knicks' Trade of Zach Randolph Hits A Snag

2008_11_cuttino.jpgIt wouldn’t be the Knicks if they didn’t add some drama to everything. Friday’s trade of Zach Randolph to the Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas has hit a snag. The Knicks are sending Cuttino Mobley for more tests on his heart after his initial physical raised concerns. The teams have until 6:30pm today to finalize the trade or all the players will return to their original teams. Would the Knicks really void a trade that saves them money and puts them in position to go after LeBron James? It seems highly unlikely; instead this is probably an attempt to wrangle a draft pick from the Clippers. more ›

The Knicks Pave Way to 2010 and King James

The Knicks Pave Way to 2010 and King James

All along it has been clear that Donnie Walsh is positioning the Knicks for a run at LeBron James after the 2010 season and Friday he made his boldest move towards that goal yet. The Knicks are sending Jamal Crawford to Golden State for Al Harrington. Crawford is the better player, but with a contract that runs through the 2011 season, his contract is a problem. Harrington is currently hurt and adds another forward to the mix, but his contract expires at the right time (after 2009-2010) for the Knicks to make a run at LeBron. And, the Knicks might not be done, as there are multiple reports that Zach Randolph could be headed out of town as well. Trading his two highest scorers on the same day would be a bold move for Donnie Walsh, but for Knicks’ fans who have waited years for a coherent plan to come out of MSG it is worth it. UPDATE: In addition to sending Crawford to Golden State, Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins are also heading to California. The two have been traded to the Clippers for shooting guard Cuttino Mobley and forward Tim Thomas, clearing even more salary for 2010. In other crazy Knicks news, they may have to dress Stephon Marbury tonight to have the 8 players required by league rules. more ›

Last Night's Action: No Offense In New Jersey

Last Night's Action: No Offense In New Jersey

Clippers 91 Nets 82: The Nets simply couldn’t shoot Tuesday night, finishing a dismal 32% from the field in an ugly loss to the Clippers at the Izod Center. Jason Kidd managed a triple-double and Richard Jefferson had 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop LA. Chris Kaman and Tim Thomas each had 18 points while Dan “the Knicks cut me this offseason” Dickau added 11 points off the bench. Carl Pavano isn’t sure... more ›

Not Dark Yet, But It's Getting There: Playoff Hopes Dim for Knicks, Nets

Not Dark Yet, But It's Getting There: Playoff Hopes Dim for Knicks, Nets

After two disappointing losses on Saturday, hopes of a NY-area team making the NBA playoffs are looking fairly grim. The Knicks stand 5 1/2 games out of a playoff spot with just 12 left to play, while the Nets are a (somewhat) more manageable 3 1/2 games back. Current #7 and #8 East seeds Indiana and Philadelphia have played with serious heart in the last week, notching wins against the likes of the Spurs, Pistons, and Lakers, so both NY and NJ seem headed for the Secaucus lottery in June. more ›

Celtics' Mouths Write Checks Their Bodies Can't Cash, and Knicks End Up Top Guns

Celtics' Mouths Write Checks Their Bodies Can't Cash, and Knicks End Up Top Guns

Wow! Two nights after beating the Spurs, the Knicks took it to the Boston Celtics with authority last night. The Celtics trash-talked through the first quarter, earning technical fouls along the way, and the Knicks responded with perhaps their best game of the season in a 107-82 demolition at the Garden. This is even more impressive when you know that Boston has an 11-1 (well, now 11-2) record since trading for Antoine Walker last month. more ›

Knicks Come Surprisingly Close to Heat

Knicks Come Surprisingly Close to Heat

When Gothamist thinks of the Knicks of recent years, a team that plays competitively against the best teams in the league doesn't really come to mine. Sure, they can compete in their payroll figures, but on the court, it's hardly been pretty. Imagine our surprise then, when the Knicks hung close with the Miami Heat last night. The Knickerbockers managed to hang in the game until Dwyane Wade hit a fadeaway jumpshot at the end of the game to give the Heat a 98-96 victory and a spot in the playoffs. more ›

Easy Come, Easy Go: Knicks home win streak stopped

Easy Come, Easy Go: Knicks home win streak stopped

The playoffs are beginning to look out of reach for this year's Knicks squad. A hugely improved 42-19 Seattle team bested NY at the Garden 90-80 to put them seven big games back of the Atlantic Division lead with just 21 left to play. The Celtics now look to be the heavy favorites for the division crown and the East's #3 seed. more ›

Tim Thomas earn$ his pay again, and Knicks win!

Tim Thomas earn$ his pay again, and Knicks win!

Friday's ugly loss to the Magic put some spark in the Knicks on Sunday. They beat the Golden State Warriors 115-99 at MSG, and have now won 4 of their last 5. The trio of Tim Thomas, Stephon Marbury, and Michael Sweetney scored a total of 70 (!!) for NY, and new acquisition Mo Taylor added 15 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Friday's setback aside, it does seem like the somewhat maligned trades have brought some fresh energy to the Knicks' clubhouse. Can the wins continue? And is anyone surprised that Tim Thomas has found his shot right as he's coming into a contract year? more ›

Knicks beat Kobes in OT - Win Streak at 3 - Seriously!

Knicks beat Kobes in OT - Win Streak at 3 - Seriously!

After weeks of heartbreaking losses, the Knicks are starting to turn it around. They won games with Philly and Indiana last week, and continued the streak with an OT victory against the LA Lakers last night at MSG. Despite blowing a 12-point lead in the final 2 minutes, the Knicks rallied and actually pulled one out at the end. more ›

Isiah Strikes Again!

Isiah Strikes Again!

Forget for a second that Isiah just added another $20 million in salaries after this year with the addition of Taylor and Rose. By trading away his only true center, and helping the Spurs beef up their frontline, the Knicks roster now consists of one point guard (two if you count Jamal Crawford), three shooting guards, two small forwards, five power forwards and Bruno Sundov. In fact, the little used Sundov is the only player on the roster taller than Tim Thomas. As Peter Vescey rightfully opined today, remember when Isiah said that getting Mohammed was they key to the three way trade that sent Keith Van Horn out and also brought in Tim Thomas. And how does this affect the playing time of Mike Sweetney? more ›

Despite Late Rally, Knicks Win Escapes In A “Flash”

Despite Late Rally, Knicks Win Escapes In A “Flash”

Despite a truly determined and aggressive double-digit comeback in last night’s 4th quarter, the Knicks dropped their 17th game in 20 contests by a score of 116-110. How, you ask? With the score tied at 95 and the clock at under 10 seconds, Marbury drove into the paint, froze, and then lobbed the ball to Kurt Thomas, who perhaps had one second to throw up an awful, off-balance shot. This isn’t Thomas’ fault – Marbury did the exact same thing to Jamal Crawford last time we visited. While Stephon can certainly score (36 points), his decision-making leaves much to be desired. more ›

Kings go all Reggie Miller on the Knicks

Kings go all Reggie Miller on the Knicks

"This one hurts." So said Herb Williams after Friday night's 116-115 loss to the Kings. On a night where the Knicks shot 61.5% from the field, out-rebounded the Kings by 10, and had Starbury score a season-high 37, the season-long habit of finding new and perplexing ways to lose continued unabated. more ›

NBA Season Opens Tonight

As if America didn’t have enough going on today, the 2004/2005 NBA season kicks off tonight with a doubleheader on TNT (how’s that for some election coverage counter programming?). The local teams don’t get started until tomorrow when the rebuilt Nets will take on Shaquille O’Neal and the Miami Heat at the Meadowlands and the Knicks travel to the Twin Cities to take on last year’s MVP and the Twolves. Both the Knicks and Nets will start the season with depleted rosters. Jason Kidd and Allan Houston will start the season on the inured list, ensuring they will miss at least the first five games of the season. more ›

On Down, One To Go

On Down, One To Go

The NBA's Expansion Draft was held last night, so now Charlotte Bobcats have the beginnings of a roster. They chose a total of 19 players, but most of them will not be with the team on opening night next year. The Bobcats chose nine restricted free agents, which automatically turned them into unrestricted free agents, allowing those nine players to negotiate a new contract with any team in the league except for the team that left them unprotected in the draft. Got that? Click here for the rest of the expansion draft rules. more ›

Knicks Offseason Preview

Knicks Offseason Preview

Unlike the Nets, this figures to be a relatively slow offseason for the Knicks. New GM Isiah Thomas already spent much of the season turning over the roster and trading away anyone associated with deposed GM Scott Layden. Only Allan Houston, Shandon Anderson, Frank Williams, Kurt Thomas, Mike Sweetney and Othella Harrington remain from opening day. more ›
