Photograph of Islanders celebrating a second period goal from Ruslan Fedotenko by Frank Franklin II/AP Islanders 4 Rangers 3 (Shootout): This was not a game for fans of goaltenders. Henrik Lundqvist was terrible, Wade Dubielewicz was too but better when it counted and the Islanders prevailed in a sloppy game. Blake Comeau got things started when he scored by throwing the puck off of Michal Rozsival to put the Islanders in front. The Rangers......

The NBA's all-star weekend often disappoints, and this year's still might, even with the race between Dick Bavetta and Charles Barkley. But no one will call David Lee's performance in the annual matchup between the league's best sophomores and rookies underwhelming. The Knicks reserve (!) forward made all 14 of his field goal attempts and scored 30 points in a 155-114 win for the sophomores, who won for the second straight year. Lee was good......

-Spurs 105, Knicks 93: In their season-opener, the Knicks nearly blew a 19-point lead and nearly lost to the Grizzlies before winning in triple overtime. On Monday, the Knicks nearly came back from a 23-point deficicit, but, after closing it to one, watched the Spurs beat back the rally. Should Isiah Thomas write this off his team's second-half effort becaues it happened in a loss, just as he ignored his team's near collapse in what......

Holy cow. Last night's NBA Finals contest was about as tight and as exciting as a sporting event can be. The game was tied at halftime, tied at the end of regulation, and won at the end by one point on a 3-pointer. It was jaw-droppingly intense. And somehow, San Antonio scraped out a 96-95 OT win to go home with a 3-2 lead. For Detroit, Chauncey Billups just wrecked the Spurs defenders with 34......

While the basketball arenas of the New York area have been dark for almost two months, the NBA playoffs have been chugging on. For those of you who stopped watching in April, or hopefully earlier if you are a Knicks fan, the NBA Finals are upon us. This year, the World Champion, Detroit Pistons will take on the San Antonio Spurs for the title. The Spurs are led by Tim Duncan, their multi-talented Center. Duncan......

7 points in 22 seconds. That pretty much sums up the Nets' night in a 90-86 loss to the Pacers on Wednesday. 39 year-old Reggie Miller continued his 2nd half surge with 22 points and some heroic shots (including a 4-point play) to clinch a playoff spot for Indiana and push the Nets 1.5 games out of the Eastern Conference race with just 5 games to play. The Nets actually led by 11 at halftime......

A marquee matchup? Not so much. That said, the Knicks will take it. Stephon Marbury had 31 points and Malik Rose added 18 against his old team as the Knicks beat the Spurs 88-75 last night at the Garden. The game was rather messy, as 2-time MVP Tim Duncan, Kurt Thomas, and Penny Hardaway all missed the game due to injury. A gimpy Manu Ginobili (who has a groin injury) played, but rarely contributed in......

Friday's ugly loss to the Magic put some spark in the Knicks on Sunday. They beat the Golden State Warriors 115-99 at MSG, and have now won 4 of their last 5. The trio of Tim Thomas, Stephon Marbury, and Michael Sweetney scored a total of 70 (!!) for NY, and new acquisition Mo Taylor added 15 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Friday's setback aside, it does seem like the somewhat maligned trades......

Team USA roared into the semifinals of the Olympics today with a sound 102 - 95 victory over previously undefeated Spain. Team USA found their stroke from long range and nailed 12 of 22 attempts from three point land. For those counting at home, that's 55 percent. Gothamist Sport's whipping boy Stephon Marbury proved us wrong in a big way by dropping a US record 31 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the field,......

Team USA finally got a breather on Monday and brought up memories of the good ol' days of 1992 as it crushed overmatched Angola 89 - 53 and assured themselves a spot in the quarterfinals of the basketball competition. Tim Duncan led the team in scoring with 15 points in just 13 minutes of playing time. Depending on the results of Monday's late games, the US will play Spain, Argentina or Italy on Thursday. The......

Look out world, Team USA might finally be "getting it". Team USA fought off an early 10 point deficit to take down Australia 89 - 79 yesterday in Men's Olympic basketball action. The vitcory pushed the American's record to 2 - 1 in round robin play. The US got big games from Allen Iverson (16 points in 23 minutes)and Tim Duncan and actually played some team defense for what seems like the first time in......

The US Means Basketball team lost a stunner yesterday to the tiny island of Puerto Rico 92-73, dropping its all time Olympic basketball record to 109-3. It wasn’t the loss itself that was so shocking, never mind that Team USA had beaten Puerto Rico five times in exhibitions since July, it was the manner in which they lost. Puerto Rico held the lead for 33 of the game’s 40 minutes. Larry Brown simply got out-coached.......

Hmmmm…perhaps Tracy McGrady and Jermaine O’Neal were on to something when they cited “security issues” as a reason for not representing their country at the Olympics. Team USA played their final warm up exhibition in Istanbul, Turkey yesterday just hours after two bombs exploded in tourist hotels miles from where the team was staying. Two people were killed and 11 more were injured. Canceling the exhibition game was talked about briefly, but ultimately the game......

Apparently Carmelo Anthony spoke too soon. The US Men's Olympic Basketball team was trounced earlier today by "European powerhouse" Italy. Just a week after Anthony, the youngest member of Team USA declared "We're guaranteeing a gold medal. We're bringing it back," the US suffered their worst exhibition loss since the NBA started sending players to the Olympics in 1992. Italy trounced the US 95-78 and the game wasn't as close as the score indicates.......

Well, we didn't get alot right, but at least we called Sebastian Telfair to the Blazers at 13. Gothamist spent the last week looking up florists in Portland, Orgeon so we could send Blazers GM John Nash a big bouquet of flowers. Because Telfair went early, high school stud Al Jefferson fell to Boston at 15, providing the Celtics with the bruising PF they so desperately needed. Unfortunately, draft night didn't become the trading......

More and more the USA Basketball committee that is selecting the 12 players for this summer’s Olympic basketball squad are hearing "I’m out", especially since the recent bombings in Athens. All this makes Gothamist wonder, who's in? Players that have turned down bids to play for Team USA include Seattle’s Ray Allen (fiancé giving birth this summer), Jersey’s Jason Kidd (nagging injuries), Toronto’s Vince Carter (getting married this summer), Minnesoata’s Kevin Garnett (fatigue from......
