Even though there wasn't a "villain" along the lines of Santino Rice or a favorite like Michael Knight, the fourth season of Project Runway has been pretty captivating with some very lovely work. Tonight, the three remaining designers' Bryant Park Fashion Week face-off will be shown and a winner announced.

Holy Cow: The New York Giants Win Super Bowl XLII!
Liveblogging Super Bowl XLII: Giants vs. Patriots
11:27PM: We're enjoying the postgame coverage of the Giants' victory, with sad Tom Brady, really excited Michael Strahan (singing Eli's praises), Peyton Manning being thrilled with his brother's success (aw!) and thoughts from the 1972 Dolpins, secure with their undefeated record for another year (but the Patriots still won more games in a row!). While we've been inside, there are a number of large crowds celebrating the Giants' win all over the city - the police have been called to break some of them up!
The Giants won the NFC Championship in overtime, beating the Green Bay Packers 23-20 in overtime and overcome the frigid, below-zero conditions. They are now headed to the Super Bowl where they will meet the New England Patriots, who beat the San Diego Chargers 21-12.
A sparkling new 700-pound ball, tons of confetti, and over a million people helped ring in the New Year from Times Square last night/early today. Mayor Bloomberg and police Police Academy valedictorian Karolina Wierzchowska, who also served in the Iraq War, hit the switch that brought the famous Times Square New Year's ball down. The Daily News called it a "shimmering pole dance," and it was the 100th time Times Square has had a ball drop to welcome the new year.
The Giants enter 2007 with more questions than answers. The biggest one is how are they going to replace the 2,100 yards of offense generated by Tiki Barber last season? They don’t get any easier after that though. Will Michael Strahan play well after missing all of training camp? Can David Diehl play left tackle? Is Eli ready to take the next step? Is the secondary any better? Has Tom Coughlin really changed?
Mayor Bloomberg unveiled a new campaign, Just Ask The Locals, "the City's first-ever five-borough marketing and advertising campaign to make visitors feel more welcome, thank them for visiting, and help them navigate New York City." The Mayor made the announcement at the new American Airlines terminal at JFK and said, "New Yorkers have always been welcoming and friendly, but not enough people around the world know it. So now we're going the extra mile to make visitors feel even more at home by offering a helpful piece of advice, an insider's tip, or just a friendly smile as they explore and enjoy all the wonderful attractions here in our City."
Eli Manning has never struck us as a high-strung type of guy. After a mistake, he seems to shrug it off in a "ho-hum, what can you do?" way and then moves on. That's not what happened when he responded yesterday to Tiki Barber's comments during halftime of Sunday's Giants-Ravens pre-season game. Barber, who was making his debut on NBC's Football Night in America, said he asked Manning to make a motivational speech once and that Manning was "very uncomfortable doing it. Sometimes it was almost comical the way he would say things." He also said that Manning was "very good as a quarterback" and that "he's been a leader in some games." But he wonders if Manning "Can he be a leader of men?"
Now that Tiki Barber is working for the Today show, it looks like the producers are all up in his business. Well, at least when Tiki's bags get lost. On his way to South Africa for the show's "Where in the World" gimmick, Barber missed a connecting flight and his bags got lost in the shuffle. And since the former NY Giant was traveling with just "essential toiletries," Sean Reis, producer for Today, purchased almost everything else for the former Giants running back.
So, now that Tiki Barber works for NBC and not the Giants Tom Coughlin is finally going to finally tell him to shut up? Visibly shaken, for probably the first time as coach of the Giants, Coughlin addressed Tiki’s comments about how Coughlin hastened his retirement. “I think to give the illusion that I had something to do with his retirement, I don’t quite follow that.”
Wellington Mara used to judge the success of a season based on whether the team was playing a meaningful game the last week of the season. Apparently his son and successor share that belief because Tom Coughlin will be back next year as Giants coach. Coughlin signed a one-year extension today, which could keep him as coach through 2008, but in reality it's just a way to keep him from being a lame duck next year. But he'll certainly be returning as a punching bag for the press.
If you didn’t see any Giants games this year and tuned in to yesterday’s 23-20 loss, you were treated to a microcosm of the season. Dumb penalties, inconsistent quarterbacking, tough running and a defense that can’t make a key stop, plagued the Giants all year and cost them the game Sunday.
The playoffs have arrived and somehow the Giants have made it into them. It’s hard to believe that a team that went 2-6 down the stretch could make it to the playoffs, but that is reflective of the mediocre NFC and a reason for the Giants to hope.
They really tried to blow it, but Tiki Barber wouldn’t let them. After building up a 27-7 lead the Giants held on for dear life and survived 34-28 over the Redskins. Barber had his finest game as a Giant, rushing for 234 yards and three touchdowns, including a pivotal 50-yard TD in the fourth quarter.
In keeping with our lists of events from 2006, here are some of the sports stories that Gothamist found compelling in the past year. It ranges from the playoff disappointment from the Mets and the Yankees to the welcome performances of last season's Rangers, this season's Jets and Rutgers.
Is there anyone out there who thinks the Giants will win tomorrow night? After quitting last week against New Orleans? After playing the way they have during the second half of the season? Without a healthy Jeremy Shockey? No, it doesn’t seem that this team has a victory in them and that’s a shame because tomorrow’s game means a lot.
How many more shots to the gut can this team take? With seven minutes left, the Giants took a 22-21 lead and were a solid defensive stand away from winning a huge game. But, the Eagles marched down the field in only 8 plays and took the lead. With just less than three minutes left, the Giants came onto the field needing to go 80 yards for the win.
The Giants face another “must win” game this week as they battle the Eagles. With a win, New York would solidify their playoff chances and keep heat on the Cowboys. With a loss, they would fall into a pack of teams all seeking one of the two wild card spots in the NFC.
The Giants took advantage of a lot of Carolina mistakes to cruise to a relatively easy 27-13 victory. The Panthers turned the ball over three times, all in the second half and therefore managed only 13 points despite amassing 463 total yards.
By now most Giants fans have heard of Michael Strahan's controversial comments this week. The injured defensive lineman first went after receiver Plaxico Burress on WFAN for lackluster effort, and Wednesday he criticized ESPN reporter Kelly Naqi and accusing her of taking an overly negative slant on the team. Those comments were naturally replayed countless times by the sports network.
The Giants face a crisis of confidence as they enter a critical game against Tennessee on Sunday. After another disastrous effort by Eli Manning, Tiki Barber took it upon himself to rip the Giants coaches for the second time in 11 months. Barber’s comments about abandoning the running game may be correct, but they were not well timed. Besides the internal bickering, the Giants have more injury problems. Corey Webster and Barry Cofield are both questionable, which further weakens a depleted defense.
If this team is going to be able to survive all of these injuries, Eli Manning is going to have to get a lot better. Manning spent the first half of the Giants’ 26-10 loss in a daze, making bad decisions and overthrowing receivers. He got better in the second half, but it was too late as Jacksonville made the plays they needed to for the win.
Many will point to a ridiculous decision to kick a 52-yard field goal on a wet and windy night and the subsequent 108-yard touchdown as the turning point of this game, but it happened much earlier. Facing a 3rd-and-22 and a dominant New York defense, the Bears got a first down off of a 26-yard running play. Three plays later, the Bears had a touchdown and the game had completely changed.
Football is a game of momentum-swings and the Giants and Cowboys had plenty of those Monday night.
Looks like the Giants will need to find a new running back for the 2007 NFL season. Yesterday, Tiki Barber indicated to the media that he is strongly considering retirement after this season. He certainly will have lots of opportunities off the field, Barber besides appearing in numerous commercials hosts a show on Sirius Radio and contributes to one on Fox News. He indicated that he would like to host a news show one day, perhaps he can help out CBS?
The Giants showed again yesterday that they are capable of a big comeback. Down 14-3, after surrendering a 90-yard run to Warrick Dunn, the defense tightened and the offense went to work and New York emerged with a 27-14 victory.
It took four week, but the Giants’ defense finally showed up. The New York defense held Washington to only 164 net yards and most importantly, only 3-for-11 on third down conversions. The pass rush finally showed up too, getting three sacks and putting a lot of pressure on Mark Brunell in the 19-3 victory.
It’s a little early to put the “must win” label on a game, but it is appropriate here. If the Giants are going to be a playoff team, they cannot afford to lose this game and head to Seattle at 0-2.
Many years ago, Three Dog Night warned “Eli’s Coming” and Giants’ fans have to hope they knew what they were talking about. For all the great moves New York made in the off-season, from adding LaVar Arrington, Will Demps and Sam Madison to drafting Barry Cofield and Mathius Kiwanuka, the season will come down to how much Eli Manning has improved. If he is the same QB who barely completed over 50% of his passes, they are in trouble. Conversely, if he is like many of the great QB’s of NFL history who took a big jump forward in their third year, New York is a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
