Making The Call: USGA Should Come Back to Bethpage

Between the weather and the crowds, the USGA may decide not to return the U.S. Open to Bethpage Black in the future and that would be a huge mistake.

US Open Fans Get Lit On The Greens And Flame Golfers

Faced with a dreadful week of weather that has play a day behind schedule and on-and-off showers keeping some golfers on the greens for upwards of eleven hours yesterday, some local fans at Bethpage Black greeted US Open golfers in the fashion New Yorkers do best—by getting wasted and heckling them. Newsday reports that Tiger Woods may have gotten the worst of it. Among the "You suck!" and "This Bud's for you!" callouts, one fan got in, "Suck it up, you've got your own video game!" The paper says that Tiger "tried to quiet the crowd with a 'sshh' hand gesture." The fans' response: "We're on Long Island, baby, where men are men! Put that umbrella down!" Other fans, lacking in that level of chutzpah and cleverness, simply stuck to targeting golfer Fred Funk by "shouting his last name as an obscenity." The boo birds and delays didn't seem to faze leader Ricky Barnes, who set an Open record by going eight under after 36 holes. He said, "Nothing you can do. It's kind of like being stuck in an airport and they won't refund you." For more, check out Newsday's U.S. Open blog.

The U.S. Open tees off tomorrow morning at Bethpage State Park's Black Course and while the field is supremely talented, there is clearly one favorite — Tiger Woods. Besides being the best golfer in the World, Woods is the defending Open champion and won the tournament when it was last held at Bethpage in 2002.

The end of the year is always overloaded with tributes to how great the past year has been. Luckily in 2008, we don’t have to wait. We can come right out and say that 2008 has been the greatest year in sports.

The NY Times takes a look inside the ping-pong world of New York. Sure, it may not be as big as the US Open, but the Naked Ping-Pong tournament is growing bigger and better every week out of a loft in Tribeca.

Forbes has put out their list of the Top 100 Most Powerful Celebrities, something to bicker about at the water cooler, no doubt. Here are some of the top-ranked New Yorker's and their earnings:

In keeping with our lists of events from 2006, here are some of the sports stories that Gothamist found compelling in the past year. It ranges from the playoff disappointment from the Mets and the Yankees to the welcome performances of last season's Rangers, this season's Jets and Rutgers.

-Yankees 9 Orioles 4: Sal Fasano became a Yankee because of his defense and not his hitting, but on Sunday he showed that he has some offensive skills too. Fasano went 2-4 with a three-run homer as New York cruised to an easy victory.

After doing some research, we were able to find a couple other options for miniature golf around the city in addition to Randall's Island and Coney Island.

Gothamist has decided to liveblog this year's Nathan's Famous July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest. Jen and Tien will be providing color commentary; Tien will also be attempting to eat hot dogs competition-style

- And, yup.

- Orioles 6, Mets 3: For the Mets, their 8-game winning streak had to end sometime, and that sometime was last night against the Orioles in a rematch of the 1969 World Series. Alay Soler struggled at the start of the game, but it he pitched well enough to give the Mets a chance for their 9th straight victory. Aaron Heilman blew the save and the Mets chances at victory in the 7th inning when he allowed 4 runs.

-Mamaroneck's Winged Foot golf course proved challenging to the US Open field on Thursday, with only Colin Montgomerie shooting under par. Tiger Woods finished at a six-over-par 76. With everyone from from ESPN to Sports Illustrated billing this as a battle between Woods and Phil Mickelson, fans will have to wait for that duel to emerge, if it does. With such a tough course, the tournament should be wide open throughout.

After much talk about the problems that the weather at Shinnecock could cause, day 1 of the U.S. Open was quite calm. Play was eventually halted by rain and thunderstorms, but the wind that can make the course so difficult was not a factor at all. After one day of play, the leaderboard had the 50 year old Jay Haas and Shigeki Maruyama tied at a four-under 66. Tiger Woods, mired in a major championship "slump", finished at 72. Erinie Els had a even par 70 and Davis Love III shot a 76. Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, who were both unable to finish the day were -2 (15) and -2 (14), respectively.

Some players that have taken practice rounds at Shinnecock are saying the wind will be the "X-factor", while the rough has played spotty at times. The last player to win the Open at Shinnecock, Corey Pavin, won by shooting an even par 280. Pavin believes scores on the course could "be decent" if the winds remain calm, but he also said that winds generally blow at 15-20 miles per hour from any direction.

There are two U.S. Opens on the local horizon. The first is the 104th U.S. Open of golf which takes place June 17-20 at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton. As if summer traffic wasn't enough, a golf tournament is also taking place in the Hamptons. You have to admit though, the PGA definitely knows their audience. Can Tiger Woods come out of his "slump" to win another major? Can Phil Mickelson take his Masters victory and win his second career major? Can Jim Furyk defend his title from 2003? Or will a new champion emerge from the field. Shinnecock Hills last hosted the U.S. Open in 1995.
In Tennis news, tickets for the US Open Championships went on sale yesterday. While good tickets for the late rounds may be hard to come by already, Gothamist recommends buying a grounds pass for early on during the tournament. That way, you can cram all sorts of Tennis goodness into one day as they play on all the courts early in the 2-week tournament. The US Open starts August 30th and runs through September 12th. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the USTA box office.
