Early yesterday morning, off-duty police officer Raphael Ospina was charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular assault after crashing his car into a private sanitation truck and then into Tiffany's on West 57th and Fifth Avenue. When asked whether Ospina had driven drunk before, his 19-year-old brother helpfully said, "I'm sure he has. He must have. I don't know for a fact." In the early morning hours, an off-duty police officer crashed his car into the midtown location of Tiffany, at Fifth Avenue and West 57th Street. WABC 7 reports, "The driver of this car flipped over, snapped a tree in half, and crushed a trash can before coming to a stop on the Fifth Avenue sidewalk," adding, "Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened." WCBS 2 offers, "The vehicle ended up on its side after colliding with a private sanitation truck on 5th Avenue." Apparently some people did like the décor in Tavern on the Green, after all—a court-ordered sale of the restaurant’s gawdy interior made a big dent in the bankrupt establishment’s $8 million debt. The piecemeal auction, which sold not only items from Tavern but from the Russian Tea Room and other restaurants, lasted three days and earned millions. Luxury retailer Tiffany announced that its 4th quarter earnings dropped 75% during the holiday shopping season. Crain's reports, "Its adjusted results beat Wall Street forecasts, but Tiffany is predicting 2009 earnings from continuing operations below Wall Street forecasts." Chairman and CEO Michael Kowalski said, "We have not yet seen signs of an upturn in our business with worldwide sales in the quarter-to-date declining more than 20 percent, which is inline with our expectation, due to varying degrees of softness in all three regions. Our planning is based on the assumption that economic conditions will remain challenging throughout the year." Oh, so is this why rich people aren't supposed to be taxed?
