Is This The End Of Sonic Youth: Kim and Thurston Split

Psychic hearts no more: the coolest couple in the world, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, announced that they were separating after 27 years of marriage, putting the future of the long-running alternative band in jeopardy. At the very end of Sonic Youth's Williamsburg Waterfront concert in August, Moore left the crowd with this final benediction: "Anything is possible through the power of love." more ›

See Henry Rollins Talk Travel With Thurston Moore

Over the years, Henry Rollins has gone from full-throttle lead singer of Black Flag to a sort of punk professor emeritus, who now spends most of his time traveling the world to perform his unique brand of "talking show." Fellow alterna-rock elder statesman Thurston Moore, who's kept a steady gig with Sonic Youth for, oh, about 30 years now, has had his fair share of world travels himself, so it's only natural that the two are pairing up for a special reading this week at Soho indie bookstore McNally Jackson. more ›

"Later tonight a giant rattlesnake head's gonna rise up over Manhattan and swim over the river and introduce us to 2012," Sonic Youth frontman and soothsayer Thurston Moore announced at the Williamsburg Waterfront deep into the quintet's set Friday night. Taking a cue from a deranged man up front who'd been yelling about making pottery with Moore back in the '80s and shouting requests for prescription medication, Moore added, "And yes, it's gonna spray LSD and angel dust, and we'll all become women." Oh, just another twisted Sonic Youth show—three freaking decades since they formed, they still know how to destroy a room with sound waves. more ›

Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth

Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth

Earlier this month, Sonic Youth dropped The Eternal, the band's 16th album and their first since fulfilling their contractual obligation to Geffen and moving to indie-label paradigm Matador Records. Recorded mostly in Northampton, Massachusetts, where front-couple Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon reside, The Eternal works as both an invigorating new turn in the band's 29 year journey and an ideal point of entry for newcomers, as the 12 tracks span the spectrum from tightly-coiled incendiary art rock to virtuoso mini noise odysseys. more ›

ART: "Drawing Art and Politics" seems like a fitting event to have on the calendar today. "Spend an evening with New York’s renowned graphic artists Jules Feiffer, David Levine, Stan Mack, and Edward Sorel, as they examine the ways in which complex social and political issues are depicted by artists in today’s media. Jules Feiffer will moderate a discussion that explores the roots of political art and social realism in the context of John Sloan’s early 20th-century illustrations of New Yorkers engaging in routine pastimes and pleasures. Presented in conjunction with John Sloan’s New York." More info here. more ›

Video of the Day: Brooklyn's Pagoda In Austin

While at SXSW last month we had the pleasure of drinking some Lone Star beers in an alley with Michael Pitt & Co. His band, Pagoda, signed with Thurston Moore's label and was in Austin to play some shows. Autopilot was on hand so we got it all on tape (though much was left on the cutting room floor), the edited footage just came in and... just be sure to watch to the very end. more ›

Sell Outs

Sell Outs

Time to start the new year off right, by seeing live music and not being left out on the cold cold sidewalk listening to your favorite songs echoing down the snow-filled street. This month there are a lot of hyped up bands coming our way. We are mainly talking about the Arcade Fire, if you don't have tickets we don't know what to tell you. If you're good at haikus you could try this contest. We'll also be having some ticket give-a-ways for some shows this month, and maybe MAYBE there will be an Arcade Fire one. But in the meantime, here are some tickets on sale that you can still buy: more ›

Sell Outs

This is where Gothamist tells you what tickets to buy...because not every band gives it away for free on a flatbed truck (yes, we've somehow managed to make the free U2 show sound dirty.) So, before the tickets sell out and you are left bargaining on Craigslist, we are here to tell you what to buy... more ›

Coolfer's Music Picks

Coolfer's Music Picks

Gothamist readers, summer (if you want to call it that) is almost over. The season of free, outdoor concerts--many of which were ruined due to rain--has passed. Time to go back indoors, into the clubs, for the best music in the city. The week ahead looks fairly decent. Sure beats the Olympics. more ›
