With the arrival of the first official weekend of summer, skies glowing in mesmerizing patterns and everyone looking for a breather from a full month of June gloom, New Yorkers already out in the streets have continued to form their own impromptu tributes to the late Michael Jackson. In Washington Square Park, a spontaneous dance party broke out yesterday at dusk with fans doing the signature moves of Moonwalker and Thriller alike, led by the few who showed up in fedoras, gloves on one hand and one MJ lover who went the full nine and had the classic red leather jacket.

Music from Michael Jackson's smash-hit Thriller album will become the basis for a Broadway musical, and the Gloved One is to oversee "every aspect of the creative process," E online reports. Producer James L. Nederlander has acquired the rights to stage an adaptation of Jackson's "Thriller" video, and the show will include songs from the eponymous album, as well as tracks from Off the Wall. Nederlander tells the Associated Press, ''I love the idea of making 'Thriller' a musical. Girl meets boy, they fall in love, boy has big secret, now what?'' Charge through the nose for tickets and merch? Playwright Matthew Freeman has set up an official "joke thread" on his blog, and the first of many catty quips has been left in the comments: "I think the review for Thriller can be two words long: Beat It."
Seventy-three zombies came to life this morning to break the Guinness World Record for the most people simultaneously reenacting the dance from Michael Jackson's Thriller video. (The previous record was 62, set in Toronto in 2006.) The title was reclaimed by the U.S.A. today at 10:00 a.m. EST inside Madame Tussauds’ in Times Square, where the wax figure of Michael Jackson gazed proudly down upon dancing zombies who traveled from as far away as Ohio.
