The season really gets underway this week so a lot of old favorites like The Simpsons, Heroes, and Boston Legal (along with some that shouldn’t be like The Batchelor) are back so you do know what to expect with them.

So, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are dating. Or "dating." They are "something." Surely, this is an upgrade for Katie, whose former fiance was Chris "Rollerball" Klein and whose alleged recent NYC street smooching partner was Josh "Bedhead" Hartnett, but how much an upgrade, we're not so sure. And who knew that former stars of The WB could travel in such lofty circles? For Cruise, it's almost like he's veering into yucky old man territory: Think Kevin Costner and Don Johnson with their much younger ladies (he may be Tom Cruise, but he's no Jack Nicholson or Warren Beatty). Was Katie worried about her post-Dawson's career - like, did her manager fritter away all his money? Did she feel the need to trump Michelle William's pregnancy? Did Tom's manager say, "Next time you date, date an American"? Questions questions questions! Expect this relationship to last at least through the premieres of War of the Worlds and Batman Begins.
And let's just say that we hope The WB decides to film at least some of The Bergdorf Blondes, based on the book by Plum Sykes, Vogue contributor and Brit-about-town, in NYC. We're thinking it'll be a low-rent version of Sex and the City (less funny, less production values, with would-be starlet) but Sykes' co-producer worked on the The Gilmore Girls and Freaks and Geeks, so who knows? [Gawker on Plum Sykes' freakout with an interviewer.]
Norman Mailer told USA Today Gary Gilmore has no relation to the Gilmore Girls. And GG creator Amy Sherman-Palladino explained how she got Mailer to the Hollywood Reporter. Gothamist has loved The Executioner's Song, and we also really enjoy his commentary in When We Were Kings, the documentary about the Rumble in the Jungle.
Astor Place Haircuts charge $12 for a man's haircut, up from 25 cents when it opened. The WB fans will remember it as the place where Felicity got her hair cut very short (some say that show jumped the shark at that moment). Gothamist has been fond of the Astor Place area ever since we worked on Wanamaker Place, aka 9th Street. There are four Starbucks within three blocks, ensuring NYU and Cooper Union students are sufficiently hopped up, plus the Mud Truck, as well as the wonderful Japanese bakery, Panya, sake bar, Decibel, and the 24 hour Crunch where we'd shower if our bosses let us out for a break. Ah, those were the days.
Other places catfights occur: Alleys, offices, sample sales.
Gothamist's options would be to nominate either its top NYC magnet school (all "Brains") or suburban NJ high school (graduating class, 137 students), but really, neither is that appealing.
Adam Buckman of the Post has seen the Buffy finale and say it's awesome. But Gothamist did not realize there was talk of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer cartoon - Joss Whedon wanted it to be on par with "Animaniacs or Batman: The Animated Series."
