Yesterday afternoon, a tractor-trailer dangled from the side of the Staten Island Expressway. Authorities believe the driver, James Christian of North Carolina, may have lost control of the rig when another car stopped short.

State Senator Carl Marcellino of Oyster Bay and Assemblyman Felix Ortiz of Brooklyn are co-sponsoring a bill to stop drivers from text messaging while driving. Last month, an SUV driven by a 17-year-old girl crashed into a tractor trailer upstate in Ontario County. The SUV's driver, Bailey Goodman, and the four friends in the car all died on impact (the tractor trailer's driver was uninjured).

On September 18, Williamsburg resident Joshua Crouch was killed while crossing the West Side Highway near West 12th Street. With few clues in the case - and the police seeming to chalk it up to being a hit-and-run, Crouch's friends and family have been asking people to come forward if they have information. The Villager reports that one Village resident may have a clue:

Gary Friedman, whose apartment overlooks the intersection where Crouch was hit, said he saw a large tractor-trailer, most likely an 18-wheeler, backing up around the time of Crouch’s death on Mon. Sept. 18 sometime around 3:20 a.m.

Yesterday afternoon, two people were killed by vehicles in two separate accidents in the same neighborhood. Sixty-six year old Josh Evans slipped on a cardboard box at the corner of Broadway and West 73rd Street and was crushed by the rear of a M104 city bus at 4:10PM. The bus reportedly had a green light and the driver was not issued a summons.

The driver whose flatbed truck carrying bricks caused a deadly accident on the New Jersey Turnpike claiming four lives may have been fatigued while driving. WNBC 4 reported last night that driver Dimitrios Tseperkas had been driving for more than 12 hours by the time the crash occured on Monday. Tseperkas drove from Port Jefferson, NY to Maryland to pick up a load of bricks. And what's more, the weight of the bricks and truck combined could have been 500-6500 pounds overweight; witnesses say that the truck was unable to brake upon approaching a traffic standstill on the turnpike, so Tseperkas tried to swerve out of the way, which started to a chain of events that included a car being slammed into another tractor-trailer and Tseperkas' load of bricks falling onto another car.

This happened a little outside of the city, but as many New Yorkers have traveled on the Tappan Zee Bridge at one point or another, we couldn't help but be amazed by the story: A tractor trailer hit a car that had pulled over to the side, causing a tremendous fire that killed the car's driver, Angel Norales. The car's passenger, Escolastico Arzu, was on fire and he jumped into the Hudson River. Arzu, who is from the Bronx, was lifted out and is at a Westchester hopistal in stable condition. Norales had taken the car to be fixed the day before, but it stalled again while on the Tappan Zee. The driver of the tractor trailor was not charged.
