Speed a Factor in Fatal Bronx Car Accident

Shocked family and friends are mourning the deaths of four people who died in a car accident on East Tremont Avenue near Commonwealth early yesterday morning. The police believe that the GMC Envoy was traveling at least 80 MPH (and witnesses think it was closer to 90-95 MPH) when it hit a utility pole and flipped over twice. The NY Times reports the car "hit the pole with such force that its roof was shorn off, three of the four people inside were ejected and the driver was decapitated." A drunk man driving a Lincoln Aviator slammed into people delivering groceries at restaurant on Seventh Avenue South near Grove Street yesterday morning. Antonio Barranco Hernandez, who had taken a delivery shift over from his son, died after the impact of the SUV severed his leg. A witness told the Daily News, "[The SUV] was going very fast. Brooklyn Pedestrian Killed by Out-of-Control SUV

A few details about the Bay Ridge incident that killed a female pedestrian and injured other pedestrians yesterday afternoon. At 86th Street and 5th Avenue, reports say that the driver of a Honda CR-V "made a wrong turn" (1010 WINS) and/or "mashed the accelerator" (Daily News). The SUV jumped the curb, first hit Lance Sevorwell (throwing him 15 feet in the air), and then pinned Lyudmila Piyavskaya, a 53-year-old Ukrainian woman, against the wall of a bakery. Piyavskaya was instantly killed and Sevorwell had leg and head injuries. more ›

Some updates to two Tuesday murders that took place in Brooklyn. First, Janine Harrington, who ran over one of her boyfriends with her SUV, was denied bail. Harrington, who thought that Jeffrey Moore had cheated on her, ran over Moore as he was riding on a bicycle near Chauncey and Rockaway. Yesterday afternoon, a burglar's ransacking of a police officer's Bayside apartment led to a police chase that culminated with the SUV crashing into a mini-school bus. The SUV and bus collided on the Douglaston Parkway near Van Zandt Avenue, and 12 people, including eight children, the bus escort and the bus driver, were taken to hospitals for injuries. A horrible accident occurred on the West Side Highway yesterday afternoon. Police say that Michael Rush was speeding while intoxicated in the southbound lanes near West 92nd Street and rear-ended a SUV. The SUV crashed into the median and burst into flames, and joggers nearby helped pull the driver out of the burning car (the driver suffered a broken pelvis and leg). Then Rush's car crashed and flipped over, killing a woman in the backseat. The passenger, in the front passenger's seat, was the woman's husband and also suffered injuries. more ›

Yesterday afternoon, a police chase in the Flatlands section ended with the car's driver being shot dead by the police and a police officer injured. Two plainclothes cops pulled over a maroon SUV that had been speeding at 90 MPH and ran a red light. When the officers went to the car, they saw the driver holding a 9mm gun. The sergeant and officer were riding in an unmarked Chevrolet Impala when they spotted the Mitsubishi driving through a red light. Police quickly pulled the SUV over at the intersection, with the officer approaching it from the driver's side, the sergeant from the other. more ›

Naked Drunk Driver Kills Pedestrian

A drunk woman fatally hit a pedestrian in a Staten Island parking lot - and not only was the driver drunk, she also naked during the incident. The police say Taliyah Taylor drove her Nissan Maxima into an intersection late last night, hitting 41 year old Larry Simon. Her car then "sideswiped a Toyota, kept going west for about 300 yards, jumped a curb and hurtled an six-foot fence into a parking lot shared by Lowe's and Kohl's Department store," according to WABC 7. Witnesses say she was driving around 90-100 MPH and didn't stop after hitting Simon. And it turns out that Simon's brother had been waiting for him nearby. more ›

Last night, a man was crossing Queens Boulevard at 67th Avenue when a silver SUV hit him without stopping. The 59 year old man had been returning home from Yom Kippur services, and Queens DA Richard Brown said, "I'm troubled. I went to temple myself today. It's the most important day of the Jewish calendar, and apparently he was on his way home from temple after observing the holiday, and to have this happen to him is just a terrible tragedy." Police are looking for a silver Nissan SUV with either broken windows or windshield as the victim remains in critical condition at Jamaica Hospital. more ›

Another incident in Brooklyn occurred when a driver, Ronald Marietta, on the Belt Parkway lost control of his car and flipped over the median, crashing into the driver's side of an oncoming SUV. The SUV's driver was killed; Marietta failed a breathalyzer test. And a speeding ticket was issued to a woman who killed a teenager crossing Beach 201st Street. In related news, two mothers whose sons were hit by a drunk driver in Queens are going to Albany to fight for tougher drunk driving laws; it turns out that the driver who killed one son and left one critically injured might only be subject to a sentence of "influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor punishable by a year in jail, rather than a felony." more ›
