Will lightning strike twice for Mel Brooks, who hopes to enliven his stage adaptation of Young Frankenstein with the same spark that made The Producers a money making machine? His new monstrosity is already selling advance tickets for a Broadway run in October – a top ticket price of $450 sets a new record for excess – but last week Young Frankenstein came staggering out of the lab for an out-of-town rampage in Seattle. The haunting question at the show’s world premiere Thursday night was whether his 20 million dollar baby would be embraced by the Emerald City or get trampled by critics with torches and pitchforks.

Rego Park and Forest Hills have been home to Uzbeki immigrants for so long that many residents and outsiders now refer to the area by the collective name Rego Parkistan. By our count there are at least a half dozen kosher kebab joints between the Boulevard of Death and 108 Street. All of these spots feature flat swordlike skewers upon which have been impaled meat, fish and the occasional vegetable, as well as such "national dishes" as plov, a heartier take on pilaf. Gothamist recently visited Zhemchuzhina, one of the newer entries in this somewhat crowded field.
Yesterday, family and neighbors were shocked when young mother Angelica Grullon was shot to death by a robber Thursday evening. WNBC spoke to the victim's sister, who said, "A girl knocked at the door and she asked for someone and...she asked if she could use the bathroom. (Angelica) was so gullible that she let her in." After using the bathroom, the stranger asked for a glass of water and then threatened Grullon, demanding money. A friend had been in the apartment, and Grullon yelled at the friend to protect her 1 year old son, Jeremiah. Then Grullon ran out of the apartment, into the common hallway, and the stranger followed her, shooting her in the back. A neighbor heard the stranger yell, "You thought I was going to let you get away with it just like that!"
If you illegally sublet your apartment - or are an illegal subletter - watch out! The NY Times has a spooky article about the growing business of investigating illegal sublets. One private investigator says with rents skyrocketing, it's now makes economic sense for landlords to pay detectives to investigate.
I actually had the idea a year before, and decided to do it again for 2005. I had always loved the Rubik's cube design and had just gotten good at solving it, so I decided a costume would be a good tribute. Anyway, after completing the first version in 2004 I was walking through Thompkins square park with some friends and got pelted with some eggs from some teenagers. Realizing they were on the verge of wrecking my costume, but forgetting I had no arms, I approached them, and it just didn't turn out so well -- my costume ended up totally destroyed and one of my friends ended up with a broken nose before the night had even begun.

One of the stranger crimes of passion lately is this weekend's murder of Roosevelt Bonds. His girlfriend Anna Rinehart beat him to death with one of her size 12 shoes outside a Brownsville barbecue restaurant. There are other reports of abuse and brawls with the couple, but the Daily News says after seeing her with another man Bonds knocked her teeth out, then Rinehart went after him with her shoe. "Cops said Rhinehart sat on Bonds' chest as she whacked him with her high heels. Both stood about 5-feet-9, though she outweighed him by about 40 pounds."
