Taxi workers held another strike starting at 5AM this morning over demands to remove the new GPS systems, for there to be a healthcare and retirement pension fund, and union recognition. However, it's unclear how many of the tens of thousands of taxi drivers actually struck.

The September 11th emergency response tapes were released today downtown. For $13, any accredited reporter could pick up a set of CDs containing 130 edited messages. All of the city newspapers are busy preparing transcripts, which we'll link to as they are published online. The Times is the first to publish, with a dozen or so messages. Here's one:

Mayor Bloomberg wasn't kidding about wanting a bigger role in the redevelopment of Ground Zero: He made sure the Daily News could tell World Trade Center leaseholder Larry Silverstein that Bloomberg wanted him to "Butt out, Larry". Gotta love the tabs and how they cut to the chase. Bloomberg told the Daily News Editorial Board, "It would be in the city's interest to get Silverstein out, [but] nobody can figure out how to do it yet. And can you imagine the stink if you gave him half a billion dollars or a billion dollars in profit to get him out?" Not if it's your own money, Bloomberg!

The September issue of Bon Appetit (which has already hit local mailboxes) features the country's five best restaurant cities, and topping the bill is good old NYC, naturally. It includes recipes from New York's "neighborhood haunts" (even thoughtfully including Brooklyn and Queens in the mix) that we treat like "extensions of [our] own kitchens." Damn, our cooking has gotten good, considering the cramped quarters. Look for recipes from Sripraphai (we're definitely making the drunken noodles from the provided recipe), August, Nam, Café Boulud, Al di Là, and Gothamist favorites Angon on the Sixth, and Prune.
