- Yankees 9, PIrates 3: A little more than a month after his dramatic announcement, and despite a short delay, Roger Clemens returned to the Yankees with a win yesterday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Clemens threw for 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, and struck out 7. It was The Rocket's first win with the team since 2003 and his 349th career victory. The 44 year-old Clemens threw 108 pitches, 69 of them for strikes. While the return of Clemens was the big news of the day (each start of his will cost about $900,000), the bigger news is the team's winning streak. The Yankees have won a season-high five games in a row, and are 2 games under .500, where they haven't been since May 9th.
- Tigers 8, Mets 7: Runs have seemingly been hard to come by in recent days for the Mets. Yesterday, they scored 7, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Oliver Perez had a rough outing for his 2nd loss in a row, allowing 5 runs over 5 innings. Guillermo Mota didn't help things when he relieved Perez, giving up 3 runs in only 1/3 of an inning. The Mets have lost 5 of 6.

Pitcher Roger Clemens, who was coaxed out of retirement with a deal worth $28 million, was supposed to be the savior of the floundering Yankees. The Bronx team's pitching staff has been plagued with injuries and Joe Torre and Ron Guidry have been forced to call up ever-younger prospects from the organization's farm system. Fans were momentarily relieved and distracted from the Yankees' on-field woes during the 7th inning stretch of a game in early May, when Clemens appeared in George Steinbrenner's box and announced that he would be returning to pitch for New York.
With the news that Roger Clemens is returning to the Yankees, reactions from the local media and Yankee fans are generally positive. Clemens made the announcement during the 7th inning of yesterday's 5-0 win over the Seattle Mariners. After the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," Bob Sheppard directed the crowd to the owner's box for a special announcement. Only then did the public find out that Clemens would be returning to pitch for the Yankees, "Well, they came and got me out of Texas. I can tell you, it's a privilege to be back. I'll be talking to y'all soon."
- Yankees 11, Tigers 6: The Yankees exploded for 5 runs in the 11th inning against the Tigers in Detroit last night. Jason Giambi got it started with a solo home run before the rest of the team got in on the action. Mariano Rivera was stellar in relief, picking up the win after pitching three innings of 1-hit ball.
- Early this morning, Xavier Nady underwent emergency appendectomy surgery and was later put on the 15-day DL by the Mets. Nady's unfortunate situation is good news for Lastings Milledge, arguably the best player in the Mets farm system. Milledge was called up from AAA and will start in tonight's game, playing right field and batting 8th. The 21 year-old Milledge was hitting .291 with 32 runs, 4 home runs, 19 RBI and 32 walks. The young outfielder also had 8 steals and 42 strikeouts in the 50 games with the Norfolk Tides.
"I'm maybe a little bit surprised that he's 7-0, but not much. I knew he'd be in good shape and be pumped up in his hometown. Changing leagues, the pitcher has the upper hand, especially the type of pitcher he is - who studies the hitters, who knows what he's doing. He's a freak of nature. People say a power pitcher can never adjust when he gets older, but he can pitch to spots because he's got great control. And who's to say he won't keep throwing 95, 96 miles per hour."Pitching like this will get him the start for the All Star game on July 13th, which happens to be in Houston. If that happens, it's possible that The Rocket's battery mate will be Mike Piazza. This Sunday, Clemens is actually scheduled to pitch against the Mets, which will be his second against the Mets since 2000. During that season, Clemens beaned Piazza in the Subway Series and threw a bat towards him in the World Series. In the first game after those incidents, Shawn Estes tried to hit Clemens, but ended up throwing the ball behind him. Few Mets remain on the team from the 2000 season, so the Clemens/Mets match-up probably won't be a big deal, but that doesn't mean we can't hype it, right?
