This year marks the 50th anniversary of Jack Kerouac's On the Road (you can see him reading from the novel on The Steve Allen Show, here). Of course, with the celebration comes some controversy. The NY Sun reports: The author of a noted Kerouac biography, Memory Babe, Gerald Nicosia, is holding a press conference in Manhattan today, where he will claim that Viking Penguin has been removing his name from books it publishes on......

Robert Moses’ legacy may be getting tweaked if organizers of three upcoming exhibitions have their way. The NY Times’ Robin Pogrebin is reporting that the Museum of the City of New York, the Queens Museum of Art and Columbia’s Wallach Art Gallery will unveil a three-parter over the next month on the master builder. Columbia University architectural historian Hilary Ballon says that Moses’ achievements have been overlooked. From the Times: Living in New York,......

Okay, so it's been 2007 for the last four days but since everyone's doing it from the critics circles to the awards nominating pools, it seemed worth it to weigh in on last year's movies. However, constructing end of the year top ten lists can be both painful and thrilling. Looking at a long list of the year's movie releases reminds you how many films passed you by in the theaters and playing favorites amongst......

Graphic designers tend to be an even-keeled lot, unless you mess with their precious Futura typeface plans. So at Monday night’s The Art of the Book: Covers With Dave Eggers, Chip Kidd and Milton Glaser, moderated by designer Michael Bierut at the 92nd Street Y, we weren’t surprised that book jacket designer and author Kidd made nice with Panelist Four – a man well into his senior years who boosted the show from the first......

Blogs aren’t just for socially-awkward shut-ins anymore and we’ve got proof: many successful, outgoing theater types maintain weblogs. While they don't get as much glory (or contempt) as their influential music-blog counterparts, they do have their dignity. And there's sometimes drama! Here’s a small sampling of some theater blogs that keep us busy at work. If you like James Urbaniak the actor, you’ll want to know James Urbaniak the blogger. At Voucher Ankles, the man......

It's just after CMJ and we're still not ready to get back in to a venue yet. However, some music would be nice. So a film about music is a perfect compromise. Lucky for us, loudQUIETloud will be screening in New York tomorrow. The documentary is an intimate portrait of The Pixies and their "difficult, tense and ultimately triumphant return as one of rock music's greatest bands". The band originally broke up in 1992......

English film director Michael Winterbottom and the three subjects of his most recent film, The Road to Guantanamo, were on hand last night for a post-screening discussion about conditions inside the Cuban base sponsored by the ACLU. Hosted by the IFC Center as a part of their ongoing Q&A series, the panel led by ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero brought home the responsibility of all people who care about human rights to speak out against......

So, while Democratic mayoral hopeful Fernando Ferrer is criticizing the Mayor for letting token booths close and L trains lose conductors (though, as Newsday points out, the Mayor doesn't control the MTA), the big Ferrer news seems to be a tape of Ferrer pollster Jeffrey Pollack banging his head on a table during a NY1 roundtable segment for The Road to City Hall. See the clip here, which is kind of hilarious because it doesn't......

Fill out those brackets! The Road to San Antonio begins. It's that time of year, sports fans nationwide are making their picks, filling out their brackets, hoping they choose the winner of this year's NCAA Basketball Tournament. Which one of the 65 teams will emerge as champion? Gothamist remembers winning once way back in high school, but has not had tournament success since. For those IRS auditors out there, we were playing with imaginary......
