Formerly Fat Nick Gets 15 Years for Hate Crime
Nick Minucci, who was on trial for beating a black man in Howard Beach, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The Queens DA had charged Minucci with a hate crime when he repeatedly hit Glenn Moore with a baseball bat in June 2005, given Minucci's use of the "n-word," which sparked a discussion of what's in a word when jurors were selected. Minucci continued to deny racism motivated his actions, telling the court after being sentenced:
"I accept responsibility for my actions 100 percent. This had nothing to do with race. This had to do with me going to defend a friend. This was a hate crime because of Howard Beach."This December will mark the 20th anniversary of an infamous attack on three black men by a white gang in Howard Beach; one of the men was chased in the street and killed by a car.

Five Year Old Murder Finally Gets an Arrest
Proving that murder cases never go cold, the police arrested a man suspected of killing a Queens man in 2001. Edgar Garzon (pictured), a gay set designer, had been attacked and beaten after leaving a Jackson Heights bar, and his death worried the gay community. However, his death was overshadowed by the September 11 attacks. Somehow, in the years since, the police found a suspect who had moved to London after the killing. The NY Times explains how the police worked with British authorities to arrest John L. McGhee:
When Mr. McGhee applied for citizenship there — and lied on his application by not revealing his criminal history — there was an opportunity to bring him home, the officials said. Authorities in London told Mr. McGhee to leave England or face prosecution there, the officials said.McGhee, who had a prior rape conviction as well as other arrests, was arrested once he got off the plane at JFK. The Queens DA says they are investigatnig whether McGhee will also be charged with a hate crime (here's the press release of the charges).
Howard Beach Hate Crime Trial Begins
The hate crime trial of Nicholas Minucci, aka Big Nick, began yesterday at the State Supreme Court in Queens. The Queens DA's opening statment argued that Minucci and his friends wanted to intimidate and injure Glenn Moore because he was black, while Minucci's defense lawyer Albert Gaudelli said their dispute was "minor dustup between six young men," especially since Moore and a friend were in the neighborhood to steal. Gaudelli also called the 19 count hate crime trial a politically motivated attempt to bolster black support for Mayor Bloomberg right before reelection. There's a lot of media attention on this case, so much so that the judge had to tell the courtroom "it's not Yankee Stadium, or the movies."
