READING: It's the first Tuesday of the month, which means...there's a Sci-Fi reading! "Now In its 19th year, the New York Review of Science Fiction Reading Series has showcased some of the most prominent and upcoming authors in the genre. However, the series' commitment to providing a venue as an ongoing science fiction reading series in New York City, is open to all works of speculative fiction, whether they be works of fantasy, magical realism, horror, or science fiction." 40 years ago, Samuel R. Delany narrated a radio adaptation of his novella, The Star Pit, for The Mind's Eye Theatre, Baird Searles' ongoing series of radio dramas at New York's listener-sponsored WBAI-FM. Tonight the anniversary of the broadcast is celebrated with Delany himself.

Four months after the opening of three much mulled-over Robert Moses exhibitions, the debate over his legacy shows no signs of waning. Yesterday’s NY Times delved yet again into the morass, this time wondering whether the two perspectives are simply creatures of their cultural moments – a city embroiled in decay vs. a city experiencing a growth spurt.

“The Secret” and its, dare we say, disciples, if you imagine it will come. Oprah did her own show on the topic, exclaiming, “I've been talking about this for so many years on my show, I just never called it The Secret!” And if Oprah's been talking about it, then you know it's gospel.

A look at some noteworthy television programs this week:

Robert Moses’ legacy may be getting tweaked if organizers of three upcoming exhibitions have their way.

The Observer recognizes Power Geezers - basically old New Yorkers who make the world go round. Entrance to this group is a double digit age that begins with at least 7 - director Mike Nichols qualifies, while someone like Knicks coach Larry Brown is a "Baby Geezer" - and "optimism, ambition, pleasure in daily routine." Hmm, so a grandparent whose daily goal is to clean out the rest of the nursing home during Bingo is a Power Geezer too? Luckily, we have a few decades to find optimism and ambition!

There's an absolutely brilliant Observer article by Choire Sicha about the new world order of gay cruising and hook-ups in New York City. Places that were once good for trysts are now being overrun by everyone, which is just like the straight people to appropriate what the gay love! The article looks at the intersection of the city's public planning with the evolution of the city's gay male population - it's like Cruising meets The Power Broker, with a splash of Emily Post (an invite to a party said, "Don’t go into the basement w/o checking your wallet. It’s hard to avoid pickpockets when your pants are on the floor.”)! Among the observations and predictions are the suggestions that the World TradeCenter's Memorial Plaza could become "Pick Up Central," the High Line as another cruising magnet and that bohemian Manhattan (and perhaps Brooklyn as well) is dead. Well, this means only one thing: The gays must flock to the Bronx, Queens or Staten Island. Or Baltimore, where it's still seedy?
