10. National Geographic – June 1985 – Afghan girl – “Haunted eyes of an Afghan refugee’s fears”Based on own magazine reading experience, Gothamist would have to say that Fabien Baron's Harper's Bazaar cover ranks at the top, though we're very fond of the two September 11th-related covers (#6 Art Spiegelman's black on black World Trade Center and Maira Kalman and Rick Meyerowitz's New Yorkistan, #14). There are high-res images of the covers here, but nowhere are there credits for who designed, illustrated or photographed the cover; we hope ASME releases that next. [Via AdFreak]

You know it's the Oscars when P. Diddy busts out the velvet suit! Gothamist loves the Oscars, and we're going to attempt to do a little liveblogging. We might need to order a vat of caffeine and an EMT team at the ready; not because Chris Rock will be boring, but because we think that Gil Cates might kill us with his newfangled ideas and because we're meh about this year's nominees in the big categories. Anyway, onto the show.

Hey all you would-be Broadway composer types: Gothamist has just heard that the New York Musical Theater Festival has just started accepting submissions for this year's festival, with a submission period going from Jan. 10 until March 11. The festival itself will run Sept. 12-Oct. 2 at various venues here in lovely NYC.

The Passion of the Christ has been out for a while now and most of the people I know have seen it. I've been reluctant to see what I feel will be a virulently anti-Semitic film and have no interest in giving Mel Gibson my money. For the sake of discussing it with my , but in the interest of keeping my money from a man I think is an anti-Semite, can I sneak into a screening of "The Passion"?

Zap2It talks with Beau Bridges about the movie: "It is about a quake. But it's also about human relationships and what's important to you at the end of the day." Yeah, that and being nutty enough for some hot 18-49 ratings for NBC. Other famous disaster movies: The Towering Inferno, Dr. Strangelove, The Poseidon Adventure, Twister.

Gothamist also liked Wilson's mention of the seminal series of books (which embraced pre-high school angst without the drama of Sweet Valley High), The Baby-Sitters' Club, which is basically like Rich Dad, Poor Dad for kids, teaching kids how to make tons of money by selling superior baby-sitting skills.

Check out Paul Ford's NPR voice on the Young Manhattanite Interview from Gothamist. And the week in full.

Rotten Tomatoes on The Passion of the Christ: So far, rotten. But Roger Ebert gives it 4 stars, calling it "the most violent film I have ever seen." Hey, Newmarket Films, there's your blurb to get the teenage boys in the doors!

If only The Passion of the Christ would be as good as The Silliness of the Seinfeld.

The Pope John Paull II's effort to get in touch with culture does not stop at just seeing The Passion of the Christ. Oh, no: The Vatican also hosted an outreach group from Poland that broke into, well, breakdancing. The Pope said, "For this creative hard work I bless you from my work," after the group spun his head on the Vatican's inlaid marble floor. John Paul also said, "Artistic talent is a gift from God and whoever discovers it in himself has a certain obligation: to know that he cannot waste this talent, but must develop it." Word to the pontiff. [Via KB]

The Washington Post's Beltway gossip Lloyd Grove gets ready for his new gig at the Daily News by going heavy on the D.C. screening circuit today. First, he leads with a screening of The Passion, with director Mel Gibson present, for insiders to quell rumors. The invitees skewed to the conservative: Matt Drudge, Peggy Noonan, Cal Thomas and Kate O'Beirne; conservative essayist Michael Novak; President Bush's abortive nominee for labor secretary, Linda Chavez; staff director Mark Rodgers of the Senate Republican conference chaired by Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.); former Republican House member Mark Siljander of Michigan; and White House staffer David Kuo. Jack Valenti seemed to be the only liberal, but as he's the head of the annoying MPAA and kiss up to Mel, Gothamist is not surprised that he told audience members, "I don't see what the controversy is all about. This is a compelling piece of art. I just called Kirk Douglas and told him that this is the movie to beat." Gothamist dies a little as another spin machine starts. [Via nw]

The trailer for Mel Gibson's new movie about the last hours of Christ's life is up and it is a downer - very bloody and spooky. James Caviezel, who is a notably vocal Catholic (he didn't want to do a nude scene with Jennifer Lopez in Angel Eyes), stars as Christ and the entire movie is in Aramaic. Aramaic!
