As for the Nets, it is hard to understand why they didn’t make a deal. With Vince Carter probably opting out of his deal at the end of the season and Jason Kidd getting older and older, this would have been a great opportunity to start the rebuilding process. Instead, the Nets will play out the string and possibly win the division, though that isn’t saying much.

The NBA's all-star weekend often disappoints, and this year's still might, even with the race between Dick Bavetta and Charles Barkley. But no one will call David Lee's performance in the annual matchup between the league's best sophomores and rookies underwhelming. The Knicks reserve (!) forward made all 14 of his field goal attempts and scored 30 points in a 155-114 win for the sophomores, who won for the second straight year. Lee was good enough to impress Tim Duncan, "I'm a big David Lee fan. I like how hard he plays. I like how he plays the game. If he continues to develop, he's going to be a heckuva player."

  • Knicks 111, Bobcats 109 (2OT): Who would've thought that David Lee would be tipping in game-winning baskets at the end of second overtimes? It was a good night for the draft class of 2005; Lee won the game after Channing Frye poured in 30 points on 14-of-26 shooting. Only eight Knicks played -- thanks to plenty of brawl-related suspensions -- and Frye, Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford each logged over 50 minutes. With such a depleted bench, Coach Isiah Thomas will take a hard-fought win against one of the league's worst after a win over the elite Utah Jazz on Monday.
  • It is getting impossible to root for the Knicks anymore. The franchise is completely lost, stuck over the salary cap for the rest of the decade and playing uninspired basketball. Now we learn that the head coach is running the team like a mob boss, ordering his players to take out opponents.

Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddy for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bids Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash.

Knicks’ fans, are you still basking in the afterglow of the worst season in franchise history? Are you looking forward to watching the Chicago Bulls use the #2 overall pick in the upcoming draft? Well, it’s time to stop blaming Isiah and Larry and focus on the big fish at MSG, Jim Dolan. Selltheknicks.com is a website designed to appeal to the “everyfan” while trying to force Dolan and Cablevision to sell their ownership interests in the Knicks, Rangers and Liberty.

Almost twenty years to the day that the Knicks selected Patrick Ewing they will attempt to find their next franchise center. With Kurt Thomas reportedly on his way out of town, the Knicks will have Michael Sweetney and not much else in the front court next year and will be keeping their fingers crossed that Channing Frye falls to them at the eighth pick. If Frye is gone, the Knicks may turn to Fran Vazquez, a 6’11” center from Spain or defy expectations and take prep star, Gerald Green. The Knicks also hold the 30th pick in the first round.

Forget for a second that Isiah just added another $20 million in salaries after this year with the addition of Taylor and Rose. By trading away his only true center, and helping the Spurs beef up their frontline, the Knicks roster now consists of one point guard (two if you count Jamal Crawford), three shooting guards, two small forwards, five power forwards and Bruno Sundov. In fact, the little used Sundov is the only player on the roster taller than Tim Thomas. As Peter Vescey rightfully opined today, remember when Isiah said that getting Mohammed was they key to the three way trade that sent Keith Van Horn out and also brought in Tim Thomas. And how does this affect the playing time of Mike Sweetney?

These losses (especially the one to the Hornets last week) have put Lenny Wilkens' job in serious jeopardy. Isiah Thomas has sworn that he would never install himself in the coaching role, but the New York media have never really put much stock in that. Given Thomas' proclivity for trades, expect some shifts in both players and coaching before next month's trade deadline.

The Sports Guy has said it many, many times, but were gonna repeat it here. Its hard being an NBA fan these days. Im not even talking about stye of play, tattoos and cornrows, the flood of high school kids in the league, etc. Im talking about NBA starts demanding top dollar contracts and then asking to be traded when their team suffers because of it. Case in point, Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets.

Embattled Brooklyn apartment dwellers have taken their fight against the proposed site of the new arena for the "Brooklyn Nets" all the way to Athens. A group called Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn unveiled a banner on one of the endangered apartments which reads "Dr. Rogge and the International Olympic Committee, Please Don't Destroy Our Homes." If New York City is awarded the Olympic Games in 2012, the proposed basketball arena would be used to house the gymnastics competition. Local residents hope that by appealing to the International Olympic Committee, a new space for the arena can be found where the current populace wont be forced to give up their apartments via eminent domain.

The NBA's Expansion Draft was held last night, so now Charlotte Bobcats have the beginnings of a roster. They chose a total of 19 players, but most of them will not be with the team on opening night next year. The Bobcats chose nine restricted free agents, which automatically turned them into unrestricted free agents, allowing those nine players to negotiate a new contract with any team in the league except for the team that left them unprotected in the draft. Got that? Click here for the rest of the expansion draft rules.

The coverage at Gothamist Sports has really been heating up, what with the Cyclones' season starting, the Yankees gearing up for the Subway Series, and U.S. Open prognosticating starting with Wimbledon underway. But, if we do say so ourselves, the piece de resistance of late is the Gothamist 2004 Mock NBA Draft, put together by Kyle Gustafson. The NBA Draft will be aired this Thursday night, from Madison Square Garden, and it's getting exciting, especially now that the Lakers are falling apart. [Aside: Our new word for a non-team player is "Laker."] And we almost forgive the NBA for getting rid of John Tesh's NBA theme song! Excellent work, Kyle, Tien, and Chris!

The NBA Draft is less than two weeks away and that means this week is the pre-draft combine in Chicago where college seniors and players from small schools look to impress the NBA scouts and improve their draft rankings. Generally, players thought to be lottery caliber selections skip the camp and choose to work out individually for any team interested in them. In the past, no name players such as Ronald "Flip" Murray, Steven Hunter and Jeryl Sasser have used this camp to shoot up the draft board and land in the first round.

Unlike last year's draft, which had high schooler LeBron James as the top prize, this year's draft seems to be short on impact players and long on potential. When the draft finally comes around at the end of June, expect to hear the word "upside" at least 70 times. Perhaps Gothamist will keep a count. UConn junior Emeka Okafor, fresh off a national title, figures to be the top selection this year.

The NBA and its players have had an absurd playoff schedule so far this season. It almost seems like they only play Thursday-Sunday and take the rest of the week off. Games are 48 minutes long, plus add on all their commercial breaks, time outs, and fouling in the final two minutes and you have plenty of rest for the players. NBA play, while physical, doesn't tend to result in concussions or many contusions at all.
