The rumor mill's in motion and word is that The Knitting Factory will be moving out of its long time home on Leonard Street. The news doesn't come as a surprise as last April brought word that the building the venue is housed in would be sold. This will be the third location for the club, which started off at 48 East Houston Street some 20 years ago (it's been on Leonard Street for 14......

Staten Island singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson found fame through the small screen before hitting airwaves nationwide. Last year one of her songs was featured in the season finale of Grey's Anatomy (video), only to be followed by another one of her songs being picked up for an Old Navy ad (video). Needless to say she went from getting write-ups in the Staten Island Advance, to getting them in the NY Times. With plans to leave the......

MOVIE: Every national election year reminds us of that part in The Dark Crystal where the hideous Skeksis systematically drain the Gelfling’s “essence” and drink it to increase their power. If you don’t know the scene we’re talking about, you need to go see it on the big screen tonight – a regular-sized TV monitor just doesn’t do Jim Henson’s creepy masterpiece justice. The one-night-only screening will be introduced by one of the film’s puppet......

The bio on Eugene Mirman's website poses the question "Who or what is Eugene Mirman?" and answers, "In 1978, at the age of four, Eugene Mirman emigrated from Russia to seek a better life in America. It fucking worked." Of course, you've probably been familiar with Mirman at least as far back as the summer of '06 when he killed at Gothamist's Laughable Hype show. For any other entertainer, that magical night would have been......

READING: It's another First Tuesday event at McNally Robinson, and this time around author and activist Mark Crispin Miller invites Anthony Lappe to center stage. The executive editor of the Guerilla News Network also produced an award-winning documentary on the war in Iraq for Showtime. More recently, he's created a graphic novel called Shooting War with illustrator Dan Goldman, which is "a spoof of the network news, the war in Iraq, and the burgeoning 'citizen......

THEATER: Described as Damn Yankees meets Ed Wood, the screwball musical LOST IN HOLLYWOODLAND is a goofy retelling of the Faust myth, with a lowly production assistant’s assistant standing in for the good doctor. (Naturally, a film producer serves as the devil.) The fun begins when the peon signs away his soul for fame and fortune. Having killed ‘em in Buffalo, the production now takes Manhattan via the New York Fringe Festival. - John Del......

Love is such a strange and varied thing. Some people love their families and friends, some love money and success, but one thing is for certain, we all need something to love. On Valentine's Day, I spoke with Tim and Eric (Tom Goes to the Mayor, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, Timanderic.com ) about what love means to them and their February 26th appearance at The Knitting Factory Did you guys plan on......

THEATER: It’s Friday night, and what better way to cut loose than an evening of interactive theater – set in plague-ravaged New York City! In All Fall Down, a savage battle rages for the dwindling supplies of the vaccine, but soon a question arises: "Is the cure worse than the disease?" Theatre Recrudescence vows to explore our “post 9/11 hysteria with elements of carnival, clowning and rock and roll.” (All Fall Down is in previews,......

Let's face it, this weekend was made for bonding with your couch, napping and eating leftovers. But if you really want to go against the flow, here are some things to get you out of the house... THEATER: Gutenberg! The Musical did so well at the recent New York Musical Theatre Festival that it’s moved on up to 59E59. (The show was directed by Alex Timbers, who most recently helmed Hell House.) In this two-man......

READING: Head down to 192 Books for a very special and cool evening - James Salter, short fiction writer, teamed with his wife Kay on Life Is Meals, a illustrated food lover's companion that takes readers from a Twelfth Night cake in January to a champagne dinner on New Year's Eve. As always with 192 Books, call ahead to reserve a spot at their readings. - Krissa Corbett Cavouras 7pm // 192 Books [192 10th......

Have you heard of Plastic People of the Universe? The band, from Prague, was a major part of the underground culture there. This underground culture is often linked back to starting just after Allen Ginsberg visited Prague, and was then expelled from Czechoslovakia, in 1965. It's also linked to a rare copy of the Velvet Underground's first record showing up there and inspiring those in the music circle. The PPU (who got their name from......

The other night we went to check out Apes and Androids again, because not since Ghostland Observatory have our pants danced so hard. They played "Thriller", as a nice sonic prequel to Halloween, and even had the long video projected (in 3-D!) in the background AND zombie dancers. Gothamist cinephile Cinecultist was also in the house, and reports from the front lines. The above clip is from a recent show at Sin-e, if anyone......

MUSIC: Love is All takes over the Knitting Factory tonight with not one, but two shows. The early show is with Cause Co-Motion! and Devastations, the later one with Cause Co-Motion! and Tyvek. Choose wisely. Or you could always watch Jared Leo bring his emo wrath upon bloggers, his band plays Roseland tonight. Recently, after a show we co-sponsored at CBGB's, we mentioned the payment at the end of the night was a bit unfair ($25 to pay three bands with). We have worked with a few venues here in New York and have had great experiences (The Knitting Factory and Tonic, to name a couple), so when something like this happens it's a surprise. Non-payment, over/double-booking, not following through with promises...these things do not a good venue......

THEATER: Both the Fringe Festival and the wildly successful, but once Fringe-y, 24 Hour Plays are celebrating their tenth anniversaries this year, so why not do it together? Starting tonight, some of the original cast members and plays from the series that proved that a gimmick (conceive, write, rehearse and perform a play in a day) can produce fresh theatre, reunite in five totally different sets of five. - Mallory Jensen Lucille Lortel Theater [121......

Thanks to everyone for coming out to our show last night. We had a great time and enjoyed bringing the focus back on New York bands, something we'll most likely continue to do in the future. We'll have some photos from the night posted by tomorrow, but for now we just wanted to say thank you to the bands! Project Jenny/Project Jan, Takka Takka, Goes Cube and Femme Generation were all amazing. And the latter......

We've seen you do it. Your favorite guilty pleasure 80's hair band song comes on the jukebox and you immediately get in to air guitar positioning. Thank god the holidays are finally over and bands are getting back into the swing of things. Now we can sell off all our unwanted gifts on eBay (how much do you think we can get for a hypercolor "hip" bible?) and spend the cash on evil rock and roll, which is back with a vengeance in our fine, fine city. Why are secret shows never really a secret? The Mooney Suzuki play in semi-secrecy......

We can't say we remember when this institution opened in 1967 (or that our parents were even of drinking age then) but it's been a mainstay since before the neighborhood was called Tribeca. Nancy Whiskey Pub is a bar's bar, a great place to drink beer, eat burgers (with cheese, $4.25) and linger. With it's proximity to venues like The Knitting Factory and Canal Room, it's probably not coincidental that the jukebox is so......

Come join us TONIGHT at our Movable Hype Anniversary Show. Just a year ago we threw our first show/concert/party at the Knitting Factory. Since then we've actually thrown 4 more there, tonight is the 5th. In addition we've had a slightly smaller version of the show at Pianos and one comedy (Laughable Hype) show at Tonic. Technically that means this is lucky number 7, but we'll still call it 5 (because we never were very......
