Remember that top secret concert on the deck of the Intrepid that we a little prematurely announced back in April? Well it's just been launched into the public eye, with plenty of details and surprise: it's this Thursday! The free concert (RSVP here) will feature sets from The Roots and The Hold Steady; food trucks; photobooths and an awesome view. So if you didn't get Radiohead tickets, now you have a place to go. Until then, revisit The Hold Steady's Gothamist House performance:
Party On The Intrepid With The Roots, The Hold Steady This Week
It's The Great Pumpkin, NYC
Hopefully Linus knows his way to the Intrepid, because there is a Great Pumpkin on deck right now. Sculptor Patrick Moser, who has multiple sclerosis and cannot use his right arm, will spend nearly five days transforming a 932-pound pumpkin into what he calls a “Grumpkin.” He scooped out the insides yesterday, and today through Friday the public is welcome to drop by, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and see him work on the carving. It will also be on display over the weekend. Can't wait to see it all lit up! Wonder how many candles that will take.
Will Smith Gets the Finger From New York
Did anyone go see destructo-porn blockbuster, I Am Legend, this weekend? Apparently New Yorkers who saw the movie up close and personal when it was being filmed gave it two thumbs down, or rather -- one middle finger up! amNewYork reports on Will Smith's run-ins with disgruntled locals.
"I would say, percentage-wise, it's the most amount of middle fingers I have received in my career. I'm used to people liking me… [all those] middle fingers, I was starting to think F-U was my name."Shutting down streets, sidewalks, the viaduct at Grand Central and...the Brooklyn Bridge may yield that sort of reaction. Director Francis Lawrence admits they were a "nuisance," but was the end result worth it for New York movie-goers?
Intrepid Almost Didn't Move
It turns out that yesterday's successful attempt to free the U.S.S. Intrepid from being mired in Hudson River mud was momentarily in doubt. The tugboats initially managed to move the 29,000 ton aircraft carrier ten feet, but then it stopped. The NY Times reports that towing pilot for McAllister Towing, Jeffrey McAllister "urged tugboat pilots to try to 'wiggle' the hull to break the grip of the mud" which worked. McAllister, though, said, "If we had one less horsepower with us today, we’d still be sitting back there scratching our heads." One tugboat crew member told Newsday, "I'm glad because I'm tired of getting calls about, 'Hey, stuck in the mud.'"
The Intrepid Moving Along the Hudson
No holiday gridlock here! A month after it refused to budge from Pier 86, the U.S.S. Intrepid has successfully been freed from the mud and is on its way to Bayonne, NJ for repairs. Six tugboats with over 30,000 horsepower helped the 27,000 ton vessel down the Hudson River. The Intrepid Foundation's president Bill White yelled, "This old baby is moving!" and other crewmembers reportedly cried. One man who served on the Intrepid during WWII told the AP, "It's like it used to be, only better. There's no bloodshed."
Intrepid Stickin' Around NYC a Little Longer
The poor Intrepid. Months of planning (not to mention $250,000) were put into planning yesterday's move from Pier 86 on the West Side of Manhattan to Bayonne, NJ, where the aircraft carrier would be repaired and repainted. Former Navy officers who originally served on the Intrepid, as well as Senator Hillary Clinton and former Mayor Ed Koch and David Dinkins, were invited for the farewell ceremony. But the Intrepid only moved 15 feet before the tugboats gave up trying to pull her (one operator said, “I can’t think of anything else, except maybe dynamite").
The Ships Will Come In: Fleet Week Starts Tomorrow
Get ready, 'cause Fleet Week begins tomorrow. There are many events planned through May 31, with a Parade of Ships tomorrow in the Hudson River (the parade is at 11:30AM, though there's a "salute to the ships" at Bluff at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn at 8AM). The Intrepid has a bunch of Fleet Week events, like the Tug of War on Saturday and Best Chow competition on Sunday.
Big Boat in Big Apple
There's a nice multimedia slideshow from the Times about the QM 2. NYC.gov has information on Queen Mary 2 festivities and viewing areas; they emphasize not to go near QM2 while it's in dock at Pier 92 due to security reasons. The big event will be on Sunday, when "both QM2 and QE2 will depart from the cruise terminal, at 7:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. respectively, sail down the Hudson River and slowly pass the Statue of Liberty at 8:30 p.m. with a fireworks display by Grucci."
